Certificate in University Preparation
The Certificate in University
Preparation (CUP) is designed
for New Zealand citizens or
permanent residents who do
not meet the requirements for
university entrance through
their existing qualifications, or
have been out of study for a
substantial period.
The CUP is designed for people who:
• have recently finished Year 13 programmes but missed university entrance/NCEA level 3
• have been out of study for a number of
years and want to refresh study skills and
obtain further background knowledge before
beginning a degree programme.
Why study for the CUP?
The CUP courses will help students to develop
the skills necessary for successful university
study, including:
• study and time-management skills
• oral and written communication skills for a variety of contexts
• analytical, critical and problem solving skills
• information literacy skills
• interpersonal, group and teamwork skills
• an appreciation of New Zealand’s diverse cultural environment
• acquiring subject knowledge for pathways to
degree programmes.
CUP courses provide an inclusive and supportive
learning environment to help students develop
their confidence to succeed at university.
Intakes
The February intake runs from 24 February to
15 June 2014.
The July intake runs from 14 July to
26 October 2014.
The November intake runs from 10 November
2014 to 8 February 2015.
The February intake of CUP leads into degree
study starting in semester two, 2014.
The July and November intakes of CUP lead into
degree study starting in semester one, 2015.
Orientation for each intake is held in the
preceding week. The Orientation schedule will
be sent out along with enrolment information.
All students are expected to attend the
orientation programme to receive important
class information.
Application for Admission
Enrolment in the CUP is restricted to New Zealand
and Australian citizens or permanent residents.
Applicants must be 18 years of age or over on
the course commencement date and have been
out of school for a minimum of one term. Those
under 18 years of age must provide evidence of
support from their school.
Selection of applicants is based on NCEA
achievements in approved subjects; other
relevant NZQA qualifications or formal study;
and relevant experience. (See UC Calendar, Award

What does the course involve?
Classes are held Monday to Friday and are
normally scheduled between 9am – 6pm. The
courses are delivered through lectures, tutorials,
seminars, exercises and group tasks.
Most courses combine internal assessment and
a final exam. Some are fully internally assessed.
Examples of internal assessment include tests,
written assignments, oral presentations, and lab
or field trip reports.
The full time programme involves 16–20 hours
of classes per week plus approximately 24
hours of self-directed learning. CUP courses are
designed for native English speakers or those
with equivalent fluency. Students from nonEnglish speaking backgrounds should discuss
their suitability for this course with a University
Liaison Officer. Phone 03 364 2993 or

the start of each intake.
Fees
The 2014 fee for the Certificate in University
Preparation is $2,680 or $670 per course.
Additional Compulsory Fees
Student Services Levy: $725 per annum.
Please note that students who enrol in the first
semester only (the February intake of CUP) and
do not continue with further study may apply for
a rebate of $362.50.
Students who enrol in second semester only (the
June or October intakes of CUP) pay only $362.50.

Can I get a student allowance
or loan?
Students enrolled in the CUP may be eligible
for Student Loans and Allowances (subject to
Ministry of Education approval). To find out what

How do I gain the certificate?
To gain the Certificate in University Preparation
you must:
• complete required oral, practical and written work for each course
• pass three out of your four courses, one of which must be BRDG 006
• gain a C average or higher across all
four courses.
Can CUP provide entry into
other educational institutions?
Students who intend to study at another
university or tertiary education provider need
to contact that institution to discuss their entry
requirements.
Can I study for the CUP
part-time?
While it is advisable to complete the CUP fulltime
in one semester, it is possible to study part-time.
Part-time students are strongly recommended
to take the core course BRDG 006 in their first
semester of study because it develops many of
the communication, research and study skills
necessary for successful university degree study.
Can I enrol in one paper?
Students who have university entrance are able to
enrol in one or more CUP courses as a Certificate
of Proficiency.

Deciding on which CUP courses to
take will depend on which degree
you are thinking of studying
towards on completion of the CUP
programme. The following is a list
