ESLP 4100: ESL Pedagogy, Methodology & Materials for PreK-12 Date Monday, April 2 – Wednesday, April 4 Unit Overview Title Verbs Focus Questions 1. What is a verb? 2. When are verbs used? 3. Do we need a verb in every sentence? 4. What is a strong verb? 5. Do you think using strong verbs help our writing? Why? Unit Summary The purpose of this Unit is to learn how to identify verbs through various activities. Through this unit, students should broaden their vocabulary by learning strong verbs. Students writing will be enhanced by learning the importance of using strong verbs in writing. Subject Area(s): English Language Arts Grade Level: 2nd Standards TN English Language Arts Common Core Standards: Standard 1: Language Standard 2: Communication Standard 3: Writing Essential Academic Learning Requirements: Language: 0201.1.1 Identify and correctly use adjectives (i.e., descriptive, comparative, superlative), nouns (i.e., common and proper, singular and plural, possessive), pronouns (i.e.,substitution for nouns), and verbs (i.e., past and present tense, action and linking, regular and irregular, subject-verb agreement). Communication: GLE 0201.2.1 Develop critical listening skills essential for comprehension, problem solving, and task completion. 0201.2.8 Participate in group discussion. • Work productively in group discussion for a particular purpose (e.g., respond to literature, solve a problem, and plan a project). • Ask and respond to questions from teacher and other group members. Writing: GLE 0201.3.1 Write in a variety of modes for different audiences and purposes. Technology Standards: Standard 1.0 -- Students will understand basic operations and concepts of technology. Standard 3.0 -- Students will use technology productivity tools. ESLP 4100: ESL Pedagogy, Methodology & Materials for PreK-12 TESOL Standards: Standard 1 Standard 2 Learning Outcomes/Goals The learner will: 1. develop a love for using strong verbs in their writing. 2. broaden vocabulary by the use of strong verbs. 3. learn to love and use technology. 4. develop a love for using and writing verbs. 5. quickly identify verbs in common conversation. Unit Scope and Sequence Students will: watch a video about verbs. act out many verbs. write a story using many verbs. . use strong verbs in their writing. use strong verbs to create a goanimate. Student Assessment Formative: I will adjust my pace of teaching to each group of students. I will also address each students work individually. This will allow me to provide extra attention to those students who are struggling. I will address each students work individually. I will also speak to each child individually throughout the lesson. I will ask them to tell me about strong and weak verbs. This will allow me a better insight to how well each child understands the concept. Summative Students will complete a worksheet about verbs at the end of the day. The worksheet will have students circle the verbs in 10 sentences The student will complete a work sheet at the end of the day which has them identify the stronger verb. ESLP 4100: ESL Pedagogy, Methodology & Materials for PreK-12 Unit Implementation This should begin with a hook/prior knowledge activity to introduce the unit and then highlight one strategy from each lesson plan Instructional Strategies Grouping Options Unit Introduction: I will pick two students & whispers some action words like jump, dance, pray, etc. into their ears & asks them to stand up and do the action. The rest of the class watches them &tries to guess the action word. The teacher writes the verbs on the board. Then, as a class, we will form sentences using the verbs. Whole group Watch a video about verbs and write down many of them on a piece of paper. Whole Group Act out verbs using ones chosen with the fishing pole. Paired Write a story in journals using verbs. Individual Share story with partner and act out all verbs. Paired Replace weak verbs with strong verbs. Whole Group Pick weak verbs to replace with strong in writing. Paired Use story to create go animate. Individual Scaffolds TeacherTube example of goanimate Accommodation Options Accommodations for Students with IEPs Students will be placed with partners that are at a different level then themselves. This will allow the lower level students to learn from the higher level student. The higher level students will benefit by providing assistance to lower level students. Highly-Capable Students Highly capable students will be given more challenging words to work with in addition to the one the whole class uses. Management/Organization Tips ESLP 4100: ESL Pedagogy, Methodology & Materials for PreK-12 Students must complete entire story using strong verbs before moving to the computers. Work will be done in computer lab to allow all students an equal amount computer time for each student. Approximate Time Needed Approximately three days with one hour per day dedicated to Language Arts. Prerequisite Skills Knowledge of basic sentence structure Knowledge of basic use of computer.
