Hotels Near West Point
(Last updated April 17, 2011)
List is sorted by distance with respect to Thayer Hotel, via Google maps.
If a date of stay is not entered, there will be a date of entry. My comments are in square brackets [ ].
Where the reviews are numerous or long, I have abbreviated comments in this list. For the complete reviews, please go to the second
table after this table of hotels. The abbreviated reviews will have three stars (***) at the beginning.
Hotels.com and Google among others, also provide reviews that might be helpful.
Travel tips:
 I-PASS can be used in Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. Look at
http://www.illinoistollway.com/portal/page?_pageid=133,1392915&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL
for a full list and caveat.
 FYI there is a toll going to Fishkill from West Point on I-84, but not the other way. I think it’s $1.
 Also, if you’re staying close to West Point (say, Ft. Montgomery) or you’re going directly to/from West Point, my
recommendation in going to/from NY is to stay on the east side of Hudson River and cross Bear Mountain Bridge just
south of Fort Montgomery. I hate using the Lincoln Tunnel or Holland Tunnel.
 My recommendation (from parent of 2010 cadet) is that if you don't mind being 20-30 minutes out, South (Palasades area)
or West (Central Valley area) of WP is easier then north (Newb, etc.)so that you don't have to go up and over the mountain
each time...plenty of options each direction that far out.

(Date of stay – March 2011) We just stayed at the Thayer for
Plebe Parent Weekend, and were pleased (really, “thrilled”) that
they had replaced (at least in our room) the rock hard slab they
used to call beds with something actually modern and
comfortable – an actual pillow-top mattress. They told us we
were in a “refreshed” room, but frankly other than the bed and a
small but flat-screen TV, it didn’t seem like they changed much
of anything, but the bed was a biggie.

*** (Date of stay – Oct 2010) We stayed at the Thayer Hotel
for one night for a rate of $159 from their website. If I had
booked the room with the hotel directly, the rate would have
been $209. At $159/night, it's OK but at $325/night, it's a ripoff.
(Date of stay – Aug 2010) Stayed at the Thayer for Ring
2
Weekend. The hotel continues to fall short--phone in the room
didn't work, the air conditioner rattled, the room wasn't properly
cleaned. However, the staff was very nice this visit.
(Date of entry – Aug 2010) Thayer Hotel- Location, location,
location...beautiful hotel, rooms very small and not much to
brag about, but the Sunday brunch is the most wonderful brunch
I have ever been too!
Good for an off weekend stay, otherwise, pretty pricey. You
have to do it at least once!
*** (Date of stay – Feb 2010) This trip we stayed at the Thayer
(Feb 28th – March 2nd). Convenient, definitely – its primary
advantage. Staff very friendly. But rooms leave a lot to be
desired, and that’s in the main building. Beds are hard as rock –
like sleeping on the floor. Restaurant acceptable generally,
though not exciting. Food OK, not first rate. Breakfast buffet
(weekday) is marginal.
(Date of stay - Oct 2009) We always stay at the
Thayer…..overly expensive for what you get….but the
convenience for our cadet to pop in and out between studying,
drills and other duties is priceless.
*** (Date of stay - Oct 2009) Unfortunately, the river view also
has the middle of the night freight trains! … if you stay at The
Thayer, check in as early as possible in the day. We took a very
early flight and arrived at WP before noon. I think our early
arrival allowed us to have a room in the main building instead
of the "dungeon".
(Date of entry – Aug 2009) The rooms are just ok, and the
price is quite high during any WP event(R-Day, A-Day, PPW,
etc), but the convenience has been well worth it for us. We love
3
being right on post.
*** (Date of entry - Aug 2009) Location, location, location!
That's what it has going for it. It's a very pricey hotel and I'm
not convinced it's worth it except for convenience. If you can
get a room in the Main Building, those rooms are fine.
However, we've been stuck in the back of the hotel in what I
refer to as "dungeon rooms". They're dark, sparse, small and
very old-fashioned. … Not having to go through security every
time you get on post is a plus.
(Date of stay - Aug 2008) Pricy. Close.
Five Star Inn

(Date of entry – Aug 2010) Five Star Inn...THERE ARE TWO
LOCATIONS...
http://www.westpointmwr.com/ACTIV
ITY/5STAR/INDEX.HTM
Off Post, the rooms are wonderful...a suite with large living
room and kitchen, bedrooms with various size beds...wonderful
location right behind the Visitors Center. Most times your
cadet can reserve the room for you, but for Graduation it has to
be done by active military people only and they have to stay
there with you and they are the only one who can check you
in...2 rooms max reserved 15 days ahead. Chancy, but worth it.
Five Star On Post is smaller...rooms small with eff. kitchen, but
there is no better location for your visit...no going in and out of
the gate and close to everything.
When reserving at the Five Star, you don't know which location
you will be assigned to until you check in.
Price can't be beat and location is the best...do it if you can!

(Date of entry – Aug 2009) Available to parents on a “spaceavailable” basis; next to the Visitor’s Center.
(Date of stay - Sep 2008) Inexpensive & Close; great if you can
get it.

West Point Motel

Highland
Falls
(Date of stay – Aug 2010) We just spent two days, in two rooms
for A-Day at the West Point Motel. We selected it because the
Thayer was full and it was the closest we could get, trying to stay
within what we thought originally was the boundaries for the
travel radius for the cadets.
02.1 mi/6 min
Other than the fact that it was close, I really can’t recommend the
place. The housekeeping was poor, the plumbing didn’t work
properly in either room, we were missing remote controls, and the
rooms overall are just not particularly comfortable.
Unfortunately, I tend to be a bit picky as I am frequently in 3 or
more hotels many weeks (just two this week though!), and I stay
at a lot of different levels of place. As a facility, this is one of the
worst I’ve ever experienced. And pretty expensive too for what
we got (but that’s supply and demand – other than a major
ceremony I don’t think anyone would pay much for the place – I
wouldn’t).
-----------------------------------------
(Date of stay - May 2007) Not recommended, very dated.
5
Might depend on your room, but mine was creepy.
(Date of entry – Aug 2010) West Point Motel...close, but gross
rooms, overpriced.

Holiday Inn Express
(Date of Stay – March 2010) We stayed at the Fort Montgomery
Holiday Inn Express. No hot water/barely lukewarm on Friday
and Saturday am. Finally had hot water on Sunday after
complaining twice. Did not want to give us the quoted rate @
check out, wanted us to pay $100 more per night on Fri and Sat.

Another plebe's parents had reserved a suite which they never
got. This hotel seems to have water issues - leaking on other
occasions, broken hot tub etc.
(Date of stay - October 2009) I have stayed at the Holiday Inn
Express twice in the last 3 weeks. Very nice, I love the place.
(Date of entry – Aug 2009) Nice but pricey. I like it very much
6
and have stayed there over 10 times.
(Date of entry – Aug 2009) I always try to get a room at the
Holiday Inn Express in Ft. Montgomery. It has a continental
breakfast free - very good, the rooms are always clean, there is a
swiming pool, a weight room, a laundry, computer room, games
etc.-- has lots of parking and is only 3 miles south of Highland
Falls. My son can walk there if he has to.

Hudson...very unique and wonderful inn with restaurant...only
10-15 minutes away, darling, quaint place, 5 rooms/private
bathrooms upstairs from the restaurant (Like grandma's house)
in a darling town, very artsy, the restaurant is wonderful. A nice
place to get away from the crowds, and still close by.
Reasonable rates too.

(Date of stay - June 2007) We're not B&B people but a friend
recommended this place. When we went to take a shower on
early morning of R Day, everyone else was attempting to do
likewise. I had a trickle in my shower! I prefer the modern
amenities of a hotel chain! Also, it was rather pricey as I recall.
The people who ran the place were as nice as can be but we
prefer a little more privacy and hot showers.
--------------------------------------(Date of entry – Aug 2010) Cromwell Inn in Cornwall on
Hudson...a very well known B & B, gorgeous old plantation like
home, gourmet breakfast, breath taking grounds, beautiful
rooms...a real splurge, pricey, but worth it.

ECONO-LODGE.

(Date of entry – Aug 2009) We had 2 rooms that were supposed
to be alike. One room was missing a table, alarm clock, coffee
maker, grab bars towel & soap rack in the bath.
New Windsor 12.3 mi/21 min
(on hwy 32).
Also the carpet may have been dyed, my son's white socks were
red after walking on the carpet.
Our room was missing trash cans, found items (trash) behind
furniture. Seemed to be a shortage of linens, house-keeping
would collect in a.m. and deliver back in p.m., house keeper
was working well into afternoon/4-5 p.m.
Rear stairwell had water soaked floor from broken ice machine
8
the 2 days we were there, and the card reader on the rear
entrance worked only part of the time. Parking lot could have
used some attention too.
This looked to be a family run motel, in their defense they
would answer calls for items, but seemed too little -too late.
With gov't discount 2 rooms/ 2 days - $400.

(Date of Stay – August 2010) My wife and I have stayed at the
Hampton Inn in Harriman each time we have visited. The staff
is wonderful and you get breakfast with your stay. The ride
from the hotel to the Stony Lonesome Gate is about 18 minutes
hotel to gate and a very easy route to navigate. Book rooms
ASAP if you book in advance and get the advanced rate it is
very affordable. Plebe-Parent weekend we booked a room for
$135.00/night plus tax but this rate is non-refundable. To get
rates go on line to Hampton Inns/Harriman Woodbury. This
hotel is very close to a great number of Restaurants which new
cadets/cadets may frequent. The hotel offers a 10% discount to
Cosimos Rest. an Italian Chain with good food five minutes
from hotel. There are other rest./stores close by not to mention
the outlet mall.

22.8 mi/33 min
(Date of stay – Aug 2010) Stayed here for A-Day. More
expensive (than Homewood Suites New Windsor). Great for Aday. Beautiful suites with separate bath for each bedroom. Nice
“living room”. Beautiful lobby and nice breakfast. This was
perfect for A-day since there was room to just hang out,
especially since we had our son’s girlfriend with us for the
weekend. Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, and lots of restaurants nearby.

(Date of stay – Aug 2010) We stayed at the Hampton Inn in
Fiskill. It was a very comfortable stay and the cost was
exceptional @109.00 per night. (We had a government rate.)
The location is 544 Route 9 and the telephone is 845-896-4000.
The hotel amenities include swimming pool, weight room, free
parking, hot breakfast daily. Very accommodating people.

our family dinner that afternoon (Graduation Day).

(Date of Stay – March 2010) While Fishkill is about ½ hour
way it is well worth the drive….the area has a Walmart, Panera,
Starbucks, Subway, Ruby Tuesday, theater etc. Very
convenient!
(Date of entry – Aug 2009) OK but nothing to brag about.
Your drive to West Point is about 45-60 minutes.
23.8 mi/38 min
(Date of Stay – March 2010) Like any other Holiday Inn
Express – clean, comfortable. Only 2 years old. But a little
more expensive on weekends than the HIE in Ramsey, NJ. We
paid $114 for non-cancellable, whereas Ramsey was $80. But
probably about 10-15 minutes closer (maybe more) than
Ramsey because you can go in through Stony Lonesome gate.
And I think Stony Lonesome gate is preferable to Thayer gate –
it seemed lot less crowded.
(Date of entry – Aug 2009) Decent rate; Hotel is geared to the
business travel – you don’t see many small children; Easy
access to Highway (3 exits from WestPoint); Free daily
Breakfast; Microwave & refrigerator in every room; Walmart
/Sams/CVS/STARBUCKS just around the corner; Several
dining restaurants.

(Date of stay – May 2010) We stayed at the Comfort Inn in
Nanuet for graduation. It was lovely. Much more reasonable than
staying on post at the Thayer. (The only place we had ever stayed
in all 4 yrs was at the Thayer)! It was about a 30 minute drive to
WP. Nothing beats the convenience of staying on post tho.We
would have if we could have gotten a room. Comfort Inn was
clean and service was very friendly. I would recommend it to
others!

(Date of Stay – March 2010)
We stayed at the Fairfield Inn in Nanuet which we really liked
(especially the pillow top beds). Everything was comfortable,
the included breakfast was well arranged, fast & easy for
especially those first 2 mornings. It had a workout room which
we were too tired to even think about and high speed internet
service, which we only used in the lobby for printing tickets & a
few priority emails, choosing not to take our laptops this trip
(Thankfully!). We would stay there again. The only slightly
negative thing I would say is that it was really hard to find that
first morning (our flight was 1 ½ hrs late arriving @ Newark &
we circled for what seemed like an eternity at 3 a.m. to find it
tucked far back into a mall area). However, it wasn’t hard to
find in daylight when ‘armed’ with sleep!

It's a good 1/2 hour drive to WP from the hotel. That got old in a
hurry. However, for R Day we only made the one trip to WP to
drop him off and for A Day it was great b/c there were only 2
other cadets families at the hotel and our cadet wanted to "get
away from the Army" for a couple days!
They have a decent breakfast and it's a nice, clean hotel for a
GREAT price - $89./night including tax.
They have a pool and a workout room. If you want to do laundry
you can use the hotel next door which is somehow affiliated.
Same for their hot tub & pool.

Mahwah, NJ 30.1 mi/46 min
(Date of stay - August 2009) The Comfort Inn in Mahwah was
very nice. Lots of restaurants nearby. I bit of a drive ie 45
minutes to WP but easy to get to. The hotel in August for ring
weekend was 100 dollars a night.
(Date of entry – Aug 2009) If you do not mind a 40- 45 minute

you are flying in and out of Newark.
Ramsey, NJ 30.7 mi/45 min
(Date of stay - August 2009) Nice rooms. Quiet. Fairly cheap
on weekends. 2 queen beds - $80 for non-cancellable, $90 for
cancellable. Good breakfast – and free.

(Date of stay – April 2011) We stayed at the Courtyard by
Marriott in Middletown, NY. I must disclose that we are
Marriott Rewards Members so we are partial! But the
hotel was great. There are a small bistro type restaurant in
the hotel as well as a bar. The drive to West Point is about
20-30 minutes depending on traffic.

(Date of stay – Aug 2010) I stayed at the Holiday Inn in
Middletown. It is about a half hour from the Post. Rooms
were clean and it was much cheaper than closer to WP.
(Date of stay - October 2009) Our cadet and her boyfriend
stayed at the Marriott Courtyard in Middletown for
Columbus Day weekend. They both loved it! My son,
Jack, and I stayed there over R-Day and really liked it,
too. You have a 20-30 minute drive to West Point from
there. It's west of USMA.
(Date of entry – Aug 2009) A nice hotel with great beds
and very large rooms. Several chain restaurants right in
the area. Not as pricey as other Marriott properties.

(Date of entry – Aug 2009) Easy on/off the highway for
the Tappan Zee Bridge. Easy to get onto the Pallisades
Parkway. Again a little more money than some other
hotels but great rooms. Very quiet, too. The bonus--Ruth
Chris steakhouse is on the premises. My husband didn't
like the drive to West Point--about an hour--but a beautiful
drive along the Pallisades Parkway.

(Date of entry – Aug 2009) I greatly recommend the IBM
Palisades in Palisades. It's a 35 minutes drive to West
Point and the area is BEAUTIFUL. The drive is thru
Palisades Parkway, a very scenic ride. The breakfast is
full breakfast and it's excellent!
(Date of entry – Aug 2009) By the airport. This was great
but about an hour's drive to West Point. Wonderful
rooms, great restaurant and a beautiful wooded area. Also
a little pricey but not as much as The Thayer. It's also
convenient to Westchester/White Plains airport, especially
if you're staying over Sunday night with an early morning
Monday flight.
Hotel
Thayer
Comment
(Date of stay – Oct 2010) We stayed at the Thayer Hotel for one night for a rate of $159 from their
website. If I had booked the room with the hotel directly, the rate would have been $209. The room was
OK--overlooking the Hudson River and accompanied by the very early morning freight trains blowing
their whistles! The gift shop is gone and replaced by a Leadership Conferences meeting rooms. The
hotel has added an outdoor rooftop bar which is a favorite of the Firsties--Zulu-time Bar. It seemed nice
looking. Thank goodness is rained during our stay because our room was right above the new bar. We
did not eat at the Thayer's restaurant because it had really gone "south" during our last visit. A new
fitness center has also been added. I think the new management is trying to improve this place but we
only use it for convenience (location and no security once we're on post) and price for non-football
weekends. At $159/night, it's OK but at $325/night, it's a rip-off.
-------------------------------------------------(Date of stay – Aug 2010) Stayed at the Thayer for Ring Weekend. The hotel continues to fall short-phone in the room didn't work, the air conditioner rattled, the room wasn't properly cleaned. However,
18
the staff was very nice this visit.
------------------------------------------------(Date of entry – Aug 2010) Thayer Hotel- Location, location, location...beautiful hotel, rooms very small
and not much to brag about, but the Sunday brunch is the most wonderful brunch I have ever been too!
Good for an off weekend stay, otherwise, pretty pricey. You have to do it at least once!
-------------------------------------------------(Date of stay – Feb 2010) This trip we stayed at the Thayer (Feb 28th – March 2nd). Here’re a few
comments (I hope this doesn’t sound too critical):
Convenient, definitely – its primary advantage. Staff very friendly. But rooms leave a lot to be
desired, and that’s in the main building. Beds are hard as rock – like sleeping on the floor. First night we
were in a room with two doubles, and the doubles are not large enough for two people, making sleep
virtually impossible. (Much smaller than “two double beds” in most hotels.) Second night our son was with
the cadets so we switched to a king, which was better. Room still very dated, paint peeling, carpet needs
cleaning. And the TV’s too small to see from the bed – though I understand some rooms have better TV’s.
This weekend was relatively inexpensive since it was an “off weekend” but prices for important weekends
really extreme for what you are getting – other than the convenience. Currently undergoing some clean up
in the common spaces, so everything smells like varnish.
Restaurant acceptable generally, though not exciting. Food OK, not first rate. Breakfast buffet
(weekday) is marginal. First three bottles of wine we ordered with dinner from their wine list were not
available. No vintages listed on the wine list, even for very expensive wines. Staff not well trained for the
type of atmosphere they are trying to convey, but friendly and accommodating. Generally reasonably
priced. Lounge has reasonable pricing and for Scotch lovers a decent collection of single-malts.
I was told that a new manager has been brought in with the goal of significantly improving the
hotel. Hopefully, we will be seeing some changes there over the next couple of years. But the basic issue
is the hotel has a monopoly on convenience, so they can sell out a marginal hotel very easily – and long in
advance - during any significant school event.
(Date of stay - October 2009) We always stay at the Thayer…..overly expensive for what you get….but
the convenience for our cadet to pop in and out between studying, drills and other duties is priceless.
(Date of stay - October 2009) For the tailgate party October 2-4 weekend, we stayed at The Thayer. It
19
was nice this time because I requested a room in the main building with a river view. Unfortunately, the
river view also has the middle of the night freight trains! But it was still nice and convenient. Because
they haven't reduced their prices, the hotel wasn't full. That also was a plus. Another piece of advice: if
you stay at The Thayer, check in as early as possible in the day. We took a very early flight and arrived at
WP before noon. I think our early arrival allowed us to have a room in the main building instead of the
"dungeon."
(Date of stay - August 2008) Pricy. Close.
(Date of entry – Aug 2009) The rooms are just ok, and the price is quite high during any WP event(RDay, A-Day, PPW, etc), but the convenience has been well worth it for us. We love being right on post.
(Date of entry – Aug 2009) Location, location, location! That's what it has going for it. It's a very pricey
hotel and I'm not convinced it's worth it except for convenience. If you can get a room in the Main
Building, those rooms are fine. However, we've been stuck in the back of the hotel in what I refer to as
"dungeon rooms". They're dark, sparse, small and very old-fashioned. You'll think you're in the Army
when you're in those rooms! And the "dungeon rooms" are the same price as the Main Building ones. I
also get angry that The Thayer makes you pre-pay for rooms for football weekends or other "high traffic"
dates. Also, you have to book for several nights. The restaurant is good but by no means excellent food,
at least by Chicago standards. Not having to go through security every time you get on post is a plus.
