CURRENT PROJECTS
RESEARCH PROJECT 1 : “The Indigenisation of Islam in South Africa: The Case of the
Murabitun” – interviews to be conducted with the head of the Murabitun in South Africa,
leaders and followers of the movement in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town and
with leaders of indigenous Muslims who are not adherents of the movement.
RESEARCH PROJECT 2: “A Survey of Political Islam in South Africa” – interviews
conducted with a number of high profile Muslim politicians and activists. Process to
continue during 2010 and should result in a publication in 2011.
RESEARCH PROJECT 3: “The Afrikaans of the Cape Muslims” with Professor Hein
Willemse of the University of Pretoria. Editing of Achmat David’s thesis on ArabicAfrikaans complete and is currently with the publisher.
