This proposal corresponds with the topic Work Programme 2013: ENV.2013.6.2-5 Urban biodiversity
and green infrastructure - FP7-ENV-2013-two-stage
Increasing biodiversity of the ecosystem of greenery in urban and municipal agglomerations with a
view to using special grass mixtures with grass, clover and herb components and the manner of
their treatment.
In addition of caring for each environmental medium (air, water, soil, rocks, organisms) increasingly
coming to the fore are some previously neglected aspects that enhance the nature and character of
the human environment. Those mainly include all non grassy areas in the landscape (the garden
lawns) and in urbanized areas (so-called public green) represent commercial lawns of parks and
building estates that are parts of the vegetation component. Lack, poor quality or neglected state of
such vegetation belongs among the most aesthetic problems of environmental and cultural
landscape and building estates (Cagaš et al., 2011).
The project aim is to increase diversity of species and to improve the level of condition of lawns in
urban areas and municipal urban agglomerations. The starting point for achieving this goal will in
particular be monitoring the current situation in selected urban lawns and municipal agglomerations
with respect to species composition and botanical evaluation in relation to soil conditions. There will
be two posts selected including urban areas: a city within 100, 000 inhabitants and a city of more
than 100,000 inhabitants. The third stand will be a village within 5000 inhabitants. Botanical
evaluation will be carried out in relation to the composition of the soil habitat and will be
implemented through phytosociological imaging monitored stands. Monitoring will focus on two
selected types of green on the park lawns and landscape in urban and municipal areas. At the same
time 3 special grass mixtures will be designed with a high diversity of grass, clover, and herbal species
for lawns in urban agglomerations and municipal agglomerations. These compounds will be tested
under the terms of OSEVA PRO Ltd. Grassland Research Station Roznov – Zubri. These mixtures will
be treated in intensive and extensive conditions. There will also be a variant with organic lawn care
system and a mulching variant included in the test. The influence of these treatment methods
proposed for species diversity mixtures (composition and evolution of the vegetation) will be
monitored. The aim will be to determine the treatment method, which ensures a high species
diversity of proposed grass mixtures and also complies with the greenery in urban and municipal
agglomerations. In Parallel with this monitoring on urban and municipal lawns selected groups of
arthropods will be also monitored. The current situation and diversity of arthropods at three selected
posts will be researched and analysed.The diversity of arthropods will be also monitored on a
targeted compound in the proposed mixture in Zubri. According to Hlava et al. (2010) the highest
species number was observed in agricultural system. It can therefore be assumed that extensive
treatment will significantly increase arthropods diversity of urban and municipal lawns as well.
Verified managements will be evaluated with a view to find a treatment of the operations to ensure
the highest diversity of grass species composition and occurrence of arthropods at the post. This
method will be recommended for treatment with a focus on green lawns in operating practices for
municipal and urban agglomerations.
Project outputs:
1 - Methodology for the establishment and maintenance of special mixtures with grass, clover and
herb componets for urban and municipal agglomerations that increases the biodiversity of the
ecosystem with a focus on green lawns.
2 - Utility model - A mix that inceases the biodiversity of lawns of municipal and urban green the
most.
3 - Reviewed and unreviewed publications in periodicals and professional practice and wide public ,
dealing with establishing and treating the lawn as part of urban vegetation.

OSEVA Research and Development Ltd. is a research organization engaged in applied research in the
field of agriculture, environment, renewable energy sources and food ingredients. OSEVA Research
and Development Ltd. meets the conditions of the Community Framework for State aid for research
and innovation (2006 / C 323/01). OSEVA Research and Development Ltd. is a subsidiary company
OSEVA PRO Ltd., based in Prague (www.oseva.cz). The main activity is research and development in
the field of natural and technical sciences or social sciences. Additional activity is the activity of
technical consultants in the field of agriculture and natural sciences. Research activity is provided by
two offices in Zubri (Grassland Research Station) and Opava (oil research institute).
Grassland Research Station (GRS) at Roznov-Zubrí belongs to the oldest forage crops institutes in
Europe. It was established to enhance the level of utilization of meadows and pastures in semimountain region. Thanks to this station a new branch grass seed production was developed. A
unique complex of breeding, seed production, cleaning and selling had the great influence
on economical and social conditions in Valachian region. In 1930 the Association of Grass Seed
Growers was established and Czechoslovakia became one of the most important exporters of grass
and legume seeds in Europe. The first native grass varieties (15 species – Rožnovský, Rožnovská)
were registered in 1940.
Research activities:
• study, conservation and use of the grass genepool (forage and amenity grasses)
• study and use of biodiversity in grasses and legumes
• control of weeds, diseases and pests in grassland
• innovative ways in grass seed production
• organic fodder crops seed growing
• control and revitalization of landscape by means of regional rich species mixtures
• alternative use of grasses (bioenergy, lawns)

Departments participate in International Development Projects, in cooperation with research
organizations and universities in developing countries e.g. in Peru, Columbia, Indonesia, Angola,
Egypt, Zambia, Kenya etc. In January 2011 a new University Centre for Environmental Sciences will be
inaugurated at CULS campus, offering cutting edge laboratory facilities as well as first class teaching
rooms for students and staff from across the university.
