Exercise OIL.1
Open exercise sheet “Exercise_OIL.1.xls”.
1) Supply of primary oil products
a) Fill in the Oil table of the questionnaire with the data below.
Messages will appear below the table as you enter the data. These message help check
whether the data entered meets the mathematical rules of the table.
In 2011, your country:

●
●
●
●
Produced 16 410 400 barrels of crude oil (use default conversion factor of 7.3 bbl/t).
Crude oil production = 16410400/7.3/1000 = 2248 kt
Imported a total of 522 315 000 litres* of crude oil (1 bbl ~ 159 litres).
Crude oil imports = 522315000/159/7.3/1000 = 450 kt
The opening stock level of crude oil was 1227 kt.
The closing stock level of crude oil was 1260 kt. Calculate and fill in the stock change.
Stock change = 1227-1260 = -33
The observed refinery input was 2670 kt.
b) Is there a statistical difference for crude oil? If so, where could it come from?
Yes of 5 kt. Maybe our import figure is too low, maybe we are missing a small part of the
production….
c) Should you worry about this statistical difference? Why?
% stat diff = 5/2670 = 0.2% which is ok. In fact, a statistical difference of zero would be more
suspicious and we tolerate a maximum of 5%.
2) Supply of secondary oil products
a) Fill in the Petroleum Products portion of the Oil table with the data below
In 2011, your country’s refineries:
● Produced 576 kt of gasoline.
● Produced 633 kt of high sulphur fuel oil.
● Produced 356 kt of other products.
● Produced 199 kt of LPG.
● Produced 391 kt of jet kerosene.
● Produced 355kt of gas / diesel oil.
b) In 2011, what was the total input to refineries in kt? 2670 kt
What was the total refinery output of oil products in kt? 2510 kt
Observe the refinery losses calculation at the bottom of the Crude Oil column of the Oil
questionnaire.
Refinery losses = 2670-2510 = 160 kt and it appears in red.
1
Do they seem reasonable?
At 6% losses it is a bit too high. Perhaps some output is missing.
c) In 2011, not all the refinery production was available for sale in the domestic market.
 The refineries used 100 kt of high sulphur fuel oil as refinery fuel.

The refineries exported all their jet kerosene production. Unfortunately 2kt of the
391kt of jet kerosene produced got spoiled with water and could only be exported
as other kerosene. (Look up the definition for transfers).
Fill out the Oil questionnaire accordingly.
Explain what an inter product transfer is. -2kt in jet kerosene transfers, 389 goes in jet
kerosene exports, 2kt in other kerosene transfers and 2kt in other kerosene exports
3) Consumption
a) Fill in the Final Consumption portion of the Oil questionnaire with the data below.





Gasoline was consumed by cars (520 kt) and by public buses (56 kt)
Report all under transport
Gas oil / Diesel was consumed for oil and gas extraction (100 kt), international
shipping (100 kt) and large transport trucks (155 kt)
The remaining fuel oil was used for: 301 kt for electricity production, 232kt in
schools.
The construction industry used 199 kt of LPG as fuel.
The petrochemical plants used 356 kt of Other Products as a feedstock to produce
plastics.
356kt must be reported in final consumption and in non energy use.
b) What is the total inland demand of oil products in the country?
= Refinery fuel + Transformation + Energy sector own use + losses + Final consumption
= 100 + 301 + 100 + 1518 = 2019 kt

Exercise OIL.2
Open “Exercise_OIL.2.xls”.
1. What errors can you see in the Oil Sheet?
List the errors in red in the questionnaire checks
2. Try to solve the errors. Examine the sheet until you find no errors.
a. Hint 1: Stock changes
 The opening stock level of crude oil was 1227 kt.
 The closing stock level of crude oil was 1077 kt.
b. Hint 2: Marine bunkers
Marine bunkers are a removal from Supply, since they are not available to be consumed in
the country
c. Hint 3: Fuel oil
High and low sulphur fuel oil production from a refinery can sometimes be confused.
d. Hint 4: Transport
100 kt of gas/diesel oil has been used in the mining industry to ship iron ore by truck to the
iron and steel smelting facility.
3. The refinery has recorded its own losses of 55 kt. Record this in the crude oil column and
observe the impact on the Refinery losses check at the end of the Losses (observed) row.

Exercise OIL.3
Open “Exercise_OIL.3.xls”.
1. The electricity generation plant in the country reports that it produced 2016.9 GWh of
electricity from High Sulphur Fuel oil.
Calculate the efficiency of this transformation.
Yes because the efficiency is too high. If you go to the electricity worksheet and enter the
output you get 60% efficiency from the check.
2. After questioning the facility, the facility changes its reported electricity generation to 1176.5
GWh.
Should we be satisfied with this response?
Yes now the efficiency is in the range i.e. 35% is ok
