Founded in 2005, Fifth House Ensemble has been hailed by the New York Times for its “conviction, authority, and finesse.” “Shape Shifters” features Melissa Snoza, flute; Herine Coetzee Koschak, cello; and Adam Marks, piano. The concert will kick off with Bohuslav Martinu’s “Trio for Flute, Cello and Piano,” a lesserknown trio full of light and bubbly melodies that sets the stage for the music to come. Following “Trio for Flute, Cello and Piano,” comes George Gershwin’s “Three Preludes” (solo piano), Astor Piazzolla’s “Le Grand Tango” (cello and piano) and Aaron Copland’s “Duo for Flute and Piano.” George Crumb’s “Voice of the Whale for 3 Masked Players” (flute, cello, piano), a semi-staged work in which performers are masked, composes the conclusion of “Shape Shifters.” The players rarely use their instruments in the expected ways. Extended techniques abound including singing into the flute, making the cello sound like a flock of seagulls, and harmonics inside the piano. “Voice of the Whale” was the first piece 5HE instrumentalists performed together, years before the forming of Fifth House Ensemble, and remains one of their most popular performance pieces. “Shape Shifters” will be performed at <<LOCATION>> on <<DATE>> at <<TIME>>.
