The Magnetism and Electricity Connection
What do you think?
We now know that moving charges (current) can create magnetic fields. Essentially,
electricity can create magnets.
 What other questions does this raise for you about the connections between
electricity and magnetism?
For You To Do
Part I: You light up my life
1. Examine the flashlight that works without batteries (kind of).
2. What parts do you notice it has? Hint: think about what tools could help you
detect what parts are there.
3. Write a statement explaining how the flashlight works.
Part II: Demonstrations
4. Your instructor will show you a demonstration using a galvanometer. Draw a
picture of the galvanometer.
5. What does the galvanometer detect?
6. Draw a circuit diagram of the galvanometer setup.
7. Explain what conditions cause the magnet to the affect the galvanometer.
Part III: Putting it all together.
8. Now write a statement about the connection between electricity and magnetism:
Changing ______________ fields create _______________ fields.
Changing ______________ fields create _______________ fields.
9. Now look at the hand generator. We can’t see everything inside, but what do you
think is going on inside to create a current? Draw a picture and explain your idea.
10. Explain how you think a hydroelectric power plant or a wind-powered generator
might work. Draw a picture and explain your idea.
