Spring Quarter 2009
The French course for beginners at LUMS aims to endow the students with not just
grammatical skills or the ability to roll their “r”s but also provide them with an insight
into the delectable world of all that is French.
The very first lesson endeavors to enamor them with the sounds of a language that is
spoken around the world by 65 to 80 million people as a native language, and by about
190 to 200 million people as a second or third language, with significant speakers in 54
countries.
The manual that will dictate the class progression is Studio 100, a structured guidebook in
which progression in syntax and grammar is accompanied by acquisition of intercultural
skills. The linguistic capabilities are attained while practicing communication in the
framework of everyday situations.
Students will learn how to:

Introduce themselves and other people
Understand and use numbers and figures
Specify quantities and amounts
Ask for and give simple directions, information and instructions
Express one’s likes and dislikes
Answer basic queries
Give personal opinions in simple sentences
Interpret gestures and expressions(non-linguistic elements)
Read and write post cards/letters/simple personal and official correspondence
Identify and develop positive/negative arguments in a conversation
Felicitate and appreciate/give a compliment
Apart from the prescribed manual, students will also discover French music, film clips
and excerpts from French poetry. Class assignments will include interactive online tasks
and simple creative writing projects.

FRENCH -2 (for students who have already studied French in the last quarter)
Spring Quarter-2009
This course aims to equip students who have already acquired basic knowledge of the
language with the necessary syntax, vocabulary and grammatical skills required to
develop expression. Students will thus learn to express their individual opinion (orally
and in writing) using simple linguistic means.
Towards the end of the course, students will be able to:

Describe and identify a place or person
Give a positive or negative opinion on something or someone
Understand a descriptive text
Ask for and give information regarding people, places, timing etc.
Express what they plan to do in the future
Receive and transmit messages
Distinguish present , past and future tenses
Understand longer texts and audio/video recordings (songs, film clips)
Write about an event that has taken place
Take notes
Present their personal point of view
Make a strong argument (comparing, adding subtler nuances)
Reformulate information in their own words
Studio 100, a book in which progression in language rules and sentence structure is
accompanied by acquisition of intercultural skills will be used in class. The method
specifically stresses upon oral comprehension and expression. Linguistic aptitude and
proficiency will be practiced and tested in the framework of communication in everyday
situations.
Supplementary practice exercises will be given as class assignments. Online researchbased projects, reading of simple texts; excerpts from French literature and translated
adaptations (Faiz in French!) along with an initiation to French music and film are also
on the cards!
