Rock Cycle
The rock cycle demonstrates how sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks can
change into other rock types through various natural processes. All rock material can
change form and remain part of the rock cycle.
Go to Interactive Rock Cycle
1. What happens when magma leaves the chamber and cools quickly?
2. What material is carried as a result of eroded rock material at the base of sea
cliffs on the coast of California?
3.
4.
5.
6.
In Utah sand carried by wind can blast through walls of rock to form
.
How do sediments get transported?
Where do clay sized particles get deposited?
What fills in the pores between sediments causing them to cement together?
7. What happens to the atoms of rocks under going metamorphism?
Go to Igneous Rocks
8. How are extrusive igneous rocks formed?
Draw a picture
9. How are intrusive igneous rocks formed?
Draw a picture
10. Why do intrusive igneous rocks have large crystals?
Go to Sedimentary Rocks
11. How are sedimentary rocks formed?
12. What are the three types of sedimentary rocks?
13. How do sediments accumulate?
14. Describe clastic and non-clastic sedimentary rocks.
Go to Metamorphic rocks
15. What conditions are necessary for metamorphism to occur?
16. What is contact metamorphism?
17. What is regional metamorphism?
18. What happened to rocks that turn into foliated metamorphic rocks?
19. How are non-foliated metamorphic rock different from foliated?
20. The rock cycle does not end with metamorphic rocks. What else could happen to
the metamorphic rock?
In addition to completing the WebQuest worksheet you will be required to write a fictional
story from a rock’s perspective giving factual accounts of your experience traveling through the
three stages of the rock cycle. All the words listed in the word bank are required for your
story.
