Greek Mythology - Final Project (Suggested ideas)
You need to pick one of the following projects to demonstrate your knowledge of Greek
Mythology. The finished project is worth 10% of your total grade. You will have class time to
work on the project but you will probably have to do some outside work on it.
Project One: Mount Olympus Newspaper
Create a newspaper that the Gods might have read. You will need to include popular sections just
like a real newspaper: international news, sports, world news, local news, entertainment, comics,
advice column, etc. Make sure that the contents of your newspaper reflect your knowledge of
Greek Mythology. Your project will be graded on the amount of knowledge that you present, the
creativity of your project, and all mechanics of good writing.
Project Two: Interviews
You are a famous reporter and have been given an exclusive panel interview with three different
Gods or Heroes from Greek Mythology that we have studied. What juicy information would
your readers want to know? What questions would you want to ask? How and where would this
interview take place? You can either write your interview as a magazine article, a TV script (do a
video to be shown in class), or do an actual performance in class (anyone that helps you will earn
some extra credit). You will need to submit the final script for a grade along with any class
presentation or video. Your project will be graded on the amount of knowledge that you present,
the creativity of your project, and all mechanics of good writing.
Project Three: Modern Day Epic Adventure
You can write a modern day epic adventure similar to the one that Odysseus took in The Odyssey.
You will need to write the epic in separate books, illustrate each book, and have similarities to
the classic Greek epic. You can either write as a story or create a book with chapters for each
portion of the epic similar to the one you read. Your project will be graded on the amount of
knowledge related to the classic epic The Odyssey that you present in your modern epic, the
creativity of your project, and all mechanics of good writing.
Project Four: Essay on "Heroism"
You can write a formal essay on "The Nature of Heroism". In this essay, you will need to
compare and contrast the ancient Greek concept of heroism versus the modern definitions of
heroism and what type of new heroes have emerged. Our modern day heroes do not slay
monsters or engage in bloody battles, but have captured the imagination of many modern people.
What qualities of heroism, redefined to these modern day heroes possess versus the classic
concept of heroism? Your project will be graded on the amount of knowledge that you present,
the creativity of your project, and all mechanics of good writing.
Project Five: Greek Monsters
You will do some research on monsters. You will need to give a listing and images of these
monsters in the myths. Compare and contrast these monsters and which characters in the myths
they had threatened and fought. Which monsters have been used by other modern authors.
Project Six: Create a Board Game
Design a mythology game. Choose the Trojan War, The Quest for the Golden Fleece, The Twelve
Labors of Hercules or The Odyssey as your beginning concept. Note all the details that you want
to include in the game. Write a detailed rulebook and design and produce the necessary
accessories: board, cards, dice, spinners, game pieces, etc. Your project will be graded on the
amount of knowledge that you present, the creativity of your project, and all mechanics of good
writing.
Project Seven: Greek Myths in Greek Pottery
Check out the library and Internet. Choose images shown in the pottery and briefly describe the
myths or characters presented. For example, you can tell the story of Jason, Perseus, Hercules,
Achilles or Odysseus using art work in pottery.
Project Eight: A Greek hero in cartoon
Design your own comic book using one of the heroes we have studied. Trace his birth, parentage,
childhood, adventures, and struggles to be a hero.
Project Nine: Greek myths painted by modern artists
Many modern artists have used Greek myths as subject of their paintings. Take one modern artist
and show six of his/her work using Greek myths.
Project Ten: Advertisement Using Myth characters
Design an advertisement of a product (ex: Olympus Camera, Venus Cosmetics, Athena’s Helmet,
Hercules Club, Demeter Breakfast Cereals, etc.), including a logo, a catchy phrase. Which target
market are you aiming at?
Project Eleven: Stage a Play
Using the stories and plays we studied, write a script and present a play. You may present the
most interesting part of a hero or heroine’s life. Add costumes and sound effects to make your
play more dramatic. Your play can even be musical.
