What Can I Do With A Major In…
COMPUTER ENGINEERING
General Information:
Computer engineering was originally a branch of the larger specialty of electrical engineering, since
early computers required engineers to physically install tubes and solder connections. In the past
few decades, however, as electrical engineers focused on the skills of building actual computing
devices, computer engineering emerged as a unique specialty. Computer engineers now focus more
of their skills on designing useful software applications that take advantage of widely available
hardware tools. Additionally, students need the patience to work with all the intricate parts within
a computer. Mathematics is a key component to this field as is an understanding of computer
components. If you major in Computer Engineering, you'll learn all about the hardware and
software aspects of computer science. You'll gain a solid understanding of circuit theory and
electronic circuits, too. Software engineering companies, telecommunications firms, designers of
digital hardware, and many other business enterprises hire Computer Engineering majors right out
of college and pay them well.
