Newton British School Medium Term Planning Subject : Science Term: 1 Year Group: Year 5 Vocabulary Required: Pollination, germination, life-cycle, reproduction, pollen Resources: CGP booklets Powerpoints Assessment Activities: Midterm assessment Marking of work Earth, Sun and the Moon: sphere, revolve, orbit, spin, rotate, axis, sunrise, sunset, north, south, east, west Duration Topic 6Weeks Living things in their habitats Fruits and seeds Seed dispersal Seed germination Insect pollination Flower parts for reproduction The life cycle of flowering plants Human growth and development What is reproduction for? 1|P a g e Objectives Through this unit children learn; That plants and animals reproduce as part of their life cycle and that in every Life cycle there are distinct processes and stages. To describe the differences in the life cycles of a mammal, an amphibian, an insect and a bird. To describe the life process of reproduction in some plants and animals. To describe the changes as humans develop to old age. Experimental and investigative work focuses on: Making observations and comparisons Drawing conclusions. An international community of learners striving for excellence and celebrating success Through this unit the children will learn; 6 Weeks Earth and Space -The Earth, Moon and the Sun are Spheres -The size of them -The Spinning Earth -Length of days over a year. -The Earth orbits the Sun -Orbit of the Moon -The Moon’s Cycle 2|P a g e To know that the Earth, Sun and Moon are all spherical in shape. To know the approximate relativity of their sizes to each other and position To understand that the Earth rotates to create night & day To understand that the Earth orbits the sun once a year creating the four seasons Understand that the Moon orbits the Earth and rotates on its axis; the Moon has phases and appears to change shape. To know which planets make up our Solar System An international community of learners striving for excellence and celebrating success
