Geo homework-5 tasks
Globalization
Task 2. The global core are the countries that are more advanced , such as New York and England,
countries with great economic power, and many public services. Countries that are the economic
centers of the world. The core would also be the MEDC’s
Task 3. The global peripheries are the countries that are economically deprived. Countries like Africa
where all the people have to work on farms because there is no other way to earn enough money to
survive. They also have limited access to technology such as the Internet and cell phones. The Periphery
can be described as the LEDC’s
Task 4.
Notes of pg 151 of IB study guide:

World systems analysis is identified with Immanuel Wallerstein.

It is a way of looking at economic, social and political development.

Wallerstein argued that an approach that looked at individual countries in isolation was too
simplistic and suffered from developmentalism.

The developmentalism schools assumed that:
-each country was economically and politically free (autonomous)
-All countries follow the same route to development. As such they were ethnocentric, believing
that what happened in North America and Europe was best and would automatically happen
elsewhere.

According to Wallerstein the capitalist world system has 3 main characteristics:
-A global market
-Many countries, which allow political and economic competition
-Three tiers of countries

The tiers are defined
-The Core (largely the MEDC’s).
-The Periphery (the countries defined as LEDC’s).
-The semi-periphery (a political term referring to countries with class struggles and social
change).

Wallerstein argued that capitalist development led to cycles of growth and stagnation.

The Kondratieff cycle is one such cycle, it is a long-term economic cycle.
-This identifies cycles of depression at roughly 50-60 year intervals the last two were in 19301930’s and the late 1980’s.

Stagnation is important for the restructuring of the world system and allows the semi-periphery
to become involved in the developmental process.

Capitalism, according to the world systems approach, includes feudalism and socialism. They are
extreme variations on the division of labor. As the world develops and changes , there will either
be a swing towards a more socialist system or a transition toward a more unequal (feudal)
system.
Task 5.
Haiti- Periphery
Niger- Semi-Periphery
Morocco-Core/MEDC
China- Core
UK-Core
Australia- Core
US-Core
Barbados- LEDC/ periphery
Haiti is a periphery because it is a very poor country that has suffered through a lot of fighting and then
a magnitude 7.0 earthquake hit it in January 2010. Haiti now needs massive help from other countries so
that there is a chance for it to recover.
