TO: RE: FR: Schick Shadel Treatment Options Holly Williams, Director of Business Development Let us help you eliminate your cravings so you can move on to a new life of hope and happiness. Could you have a better life if you or your loved one’s substance use problems were resolved? Come or send them to Schick Shadel Hospital and we will provide freedom from the need for drugs and alcohol which lead to many other health afflictions, often with disastrous consequences. For 80 years, Schick Shadel Hospital’s treatment program has helped over 65,000 men and women lose the craving for drugs & alcohol. Offered in an atmosphere of understanding and acceptance with compassionate physicians, nurses and counselors, the program addresses that addiction is both physiological and psychological. Willpower, counseling and social support alone don’t always work since genetic predisposition and repeated exposure can also lead to addiction. The Schick Shadel Program Many years of research at Schick Shadel Hospital has established that Counter Conditioning (retraining the memory against the pleasurable aspects of using alcohol) in combination with standardized treatment produces excellent results. Refined through many decades of treatment experience, the Schick Shadel method produces an expected abstinence rate (for alcohol) of around 65 percent (after one year.) This treatment method provides the foundation for our programs for cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana, prescription opioids, and heroin. Schick Shadel treats alcohol, cocaine, marijuana, prescription opioids, meth-amphetamine, heroin and IV use. The program is completed in just 10 days if detox is not required. Medical detox is generally 2-7 days, depending on the substance(s) and use history. The treatment program uses behavioral modification techniques, individual counseling, education, and relaxation therapies. The behavior modification techniques are composed of either Chemical Counter Conditioning (nausea based) or Electrical (faradic) Counter Conditioning. Cognitive behavioral techniques are applied to assist in the development of the aversion and to correct self-defeating thoughts and feelings. Treatment consists of alternating days of Counter Conditioning (at least 5) under medical supervision and restorative, conscious sedation / relaxation therapies (4 total). The Conscious Sedation treatments permit our medical staff to monitor the level of conditioning that is occurring, and identify the underlying emotional triggers for the addiction. Counter Conditioning Schick’s non-12 step program recognizes that addiction is “a compulsive physiological need for a habit forming substance.” The cornerstone of Schick Shadel Hospital’s counter conditioning model was developed from Pavlovian conditioning principles, and more recently, is recognized as incorporating taste aversion conditioning methodology. Our drug and alcohol addiction treatment program provides a researched, proven successful, medical alternative to many of the other treatment modalities available. It is both the oldest existing behavioral therapy and the oldest effective medical treatment for alcoholism. Therefore, the person suffering from alcohol addiction or drug addiction is in need of medical addiction treatment. Counter conditioning repeatedly pairs the patient’s problem substance, or a realistic placebo, with nausea, induced by an emetic agent, without intoxication. Our medical treatment is provided in a therapeutic environment, under close medical supervision of our physicians and nursing staff, assuring both safety and effectiveness. Reinforcement at 30 & 90 Days Patients return at 30 and 90 days post treatment for an inpatient follow-up session. This includes an overnight hospital stay (included in the original treatment cost) and consists of one counter conditioning treatment, one minimal sedation interview, group counseling and education. Reinforcements are strongly encouraged to maximize the program effectiveness. In addition, the hospital provides two years of continuing care support to our patients. Participation in the treatment program is voluntary. Patients enter the hospital personally invested in their recovery and willing to make the personal changes necessary to conquer their addiction(s), as is evidenced by the low AMA rate of less than 5%. Schick Shadel Hospital’s comprehensive inpatient program is licensed by the Washington State Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery (DBHR).
