Sparta and Athens Questions: 1. self-discipline and obedience 2. While the boys and young men in Sparta were away from home serving as soldiers, women filled the roles, such as property owners and heads of households, that men filled in other societies. 3. 40 years 4. Boys trained for military service from age 18 to 20, and men served in the army from age 20 to 60. Spartan women had more rights than other Greek women. 5. Rich Athenian boys learned reading, writing, counting, singing, playing a musical instrument, history, and thinking. 6. It didn’t emphasize the military, and it encouraged the arts and sciences. 7. Sparta won the Peloponnesian War. 8. Many city-states formed an alliance again Athens because Athens treated them like subjects. Sparta: 1). Society dominated by the military/army. *Boys learned to run, jump, swim, and throw javelins to increase strength, with more intensity than the Athenians.-They were not educated! 2). When a boy was born, government officials came to look at him to see if he was healthy-If not, was taken outside of the city and left to die. 3). Boys weren’t given shoes or heavy clothes, even in the winter. 4). Weren’t given much food. 5). Boys were allowed to steal food if they could, but if they were caught, they were whipped. 6). Ages 7-12 Boys left home and got a basic education-Values training. 7). Ages 12-18, boys developed physical skills through exercise-Physical training. 8). Ages 18-20 Men learned how to fight as part of the army-Military training. 9). Ages 20-30 Soldiers formed the body of the Spartan army-Military Service. At this point Spartans lived in army barracks and only occasionally visited their families. 10). Age 30 Soldiers could participate in the assembly and move back home-Full citizenship. 11). Spartan men stayed in the army until they turned 60. 12). Soldiers had to live tough lives free from comforts. The Spartans didn’t have luxuries like soft furniture and expensive food. 13). Spartan women had more rights than other Greek women. 14). Some women owned land in Sparta and ran their households. 15). Spartan women didn’t spend time spinning cloth or weaving-this was for the slaves. 16). Women received physical training. They learned to run, jump, wrestle, and throw javelins. Athens: 1). The Athenians valued education, clear thinking, and the arts. 2). At a young age, rich boys worked to improve both their bodies and their minds. 3). Training not as harsh as Spartans. 4). Athenian men didn’t have to devote their whole lives to the army. 5). All men joined the army, but only for two years (18-20)-They helped defend the city. 6). Older men only had to serve in the army in times of war. 7). Learned to read, write, and count. 8). Learned to sing and play musical instruments. 9). Boys learned about Greek history and legend, and Greek literature. 10). Boys from rich families continued education with private tutors. 11). Tutors taught students philosophy, geometry, astronomy, and other subjects. 12). Public speaking helped prepare boys for participation in the assembly. 13). Boys from poor families usually didn’t get any education, but could read and write a little. 14). Most boys from poor families became farmers or went to work with craftspeople to learn other trades. 15). Girls got almost no education. 16). A few girls were taught how to read and write by private tutors. 17). Most girls only learned household tasks like weaving and sewing. 18). Women had fewer rights than other women in many other city-states. 19). Women could not serve in the government. 20). Women could not leave their homes, except on special occasions. 21).
