Acids taste sour, react with metals and carbonates, and turn blue litmus Paper: Red.
Bases taste bitter, feel slippery, and turn red litmus paper: Blue. The pH scale ranges from 0
to 14, with the most acidic substances at the lower end (0 to 6.9) and the most basic
substances at the higher end (7.1 to 14) of the scale. In this activity, you will use pH indicator
paper to test the pH of different household substances.

Materials
1. Get a test tube rack with different substances from your teacher.
2.
Put on your safety goggles and lab apron.
Observe the materials provided and using what you know or the
physical characteristics of the given substances, predict
which are acidic and which are basic. Record your predictions
in the data table.
3. Using the dropper, transfer one drop of one sample
onto a fresh strip of pH test paper.
4. Compare the color of the strip to the pH test scale on the
package. Record the pH next to the name of the sample
in the Data table. Place the name of the sample on the pH scale.
5. Repeat the procedure for all your samples.
