Unit XII: Ch.17 “Reflection & Mirrors”, Ch.18 “Refraction & Lenses” Standards 4.2, 4.4, 6.1, 6.2 Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, October ‘06 Day 1- The Electromagnetic Spectrum Students will read p.p. 705-708 and we will answer questions to discuss what a light wave is. Students will be assigned a portion of the EM spectrum to research. I may handout readings or students might go on the computers. Groups will report to the class on what they learned. We will refer to an overhead showing the spectrum as they present. HW- p. 452 #25, 33, 39, 54, 58, 59, 68 Day 2- Reflection Lab Students will perform the reflection lab with plane mirrors and straight pins to investigate the relationship between the object and image distance and to observe how light bounces off a mirror. HW- p. 478 #31-33, 45 Day 3- Reflection Notes/Practice We will discuss the results of the lab and do some practice involving reflection. I will go over the two types of curved mirrors and how they also follow the law of reflection. HW- p. 479 #42, 53- 55, 57 part a only Day 4- Refraction Lab After correcting the homework students will perform the refraction lab to investigate how light bends when it enters a new medium. HW- p. 508 #38, 39, 53-55 Day 5- Refraction Notes and Optical Illusions We will discuss the results of the lab and I will go over Snell’s Law. After doing a couple of example problems, students will observe different optical illusions in stations. We will discuss their observations and see how each one depends on refraction. HW- p. 509 # 67-70, 75 Day 6- Critical Angle and Total Internal Reflection After correcting the homework we will take notes on total internal reflection. We will do an example problem with a glass prism which has a 90º angle. I will demonstrate to the students with a laser and a prism that the answer is correct. To practice Snell’s law and apply their understanding of critical angle, students will calculate and trace the path of three light rays through a diamond. HW- p. 510 # 76, 77, 79, 95 Day 7- Lenses Lab After correcting the homework, I will go over what focal length means using a magnifying glass and students will perform a lab involving double convex lenses. The first part of the lab is an experimental means of finding images. In the second part students will find the location of an image using ray diagramming. The results of each part should be the same and students will find there is a pattern between the object and image distances. HW- Analysis Questions Day 8- Eyesight Students will analyze how a magnifying glass can be used to enlarge an object by doing a ray diagram. We will then look at a double concave lens briefly. Finally we will analyze some scale drawings to discuss near and farsightedness. HW- Review Packet Day 9- Color Through demonstrations and discussions I will go over the primary and secondary colors of light and pigments. Students will answer questions to apply their understanding of the concepts discussed. If necessary I will do more demonstrations as we go over the answers. If there is time we can discuss rainbows, the color of the sky or other applications of color. HW- Review Light Waves
