MATH 251 ACTIVITY 7: WHY: Time/Cost Tradeoffs in a Project (“Crashing”) One of the uses of the PERT/CPM method is in making decisions about using additional resources to speed up activities in order to complete a project in reduced time. This process is referred to as crashing . The goal is to achieve a particular project duration at lowest cost. It can also be used to find the shortest possible duration for a fixed cost (over the normal cost). LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Work as a team, using the team roles. 2. Be able to determine the least expensive way to reduce the time of a project to a specified goal. 3. Be able to determine the fastest schedule possible for a fixed (additional) cost. CRITERIA: 1. If we are crashing a project without using the linear programming setup, why would we expect to look at critical activities – and only at critical activities – first? 2. We have not discussed (and will not) use of a project network model for actually managing a project (during the implementation phase). How might it be useful?
