WELCOME TO UNIVERSITY LUTHERAN CHURCH during this Easter season. On this day, we celebrate the creation and sustenance of the Earth and acknowledge how the resurrection of Jesus is a reminder to us of the re-creative power of God’s love and the hope that we have in God who constantly is making all things new on this Earth. We will be using our Earth Liturgy for worship as every dimension of our service will help us to be mindful of the beauty and care of God’s wonderful creation that we call planet Earth. WE WELCOME EVERYONE TO HOLY COMMUNION to receive God’s gift of forgiveness and the powerful freedom of a new life in Christ. Please come down the center aisle, proceed to the communion rail, and kneel or stand at the first open space. Hold out your hand to receive the bread. Gluten-free wafers are available. Please indicate your desire at the time you are offered the bread. You may drink either from an individual glass, which will be served first, or from the chalice. The individual glasses in the center of the tray contain grape juice. An acolyte will pass by to pick up your individual glass. In the spirit of continuous communion, please return to your seat via the side aisles after you have drunk from the glass or chalice. After everyone has been served at the communion rail, the ministers will serve anyone in the pew that is unable to come forward. Please indicate your desire in this regard to the usher. Children who commune at their home congregation are welcome to receive the elements. Please hold out your hand to let the minister know that you wish to receive communion. Parents who desire that their children not receive communion may bring them forward for a blessing. PLEASE INDICATE YOUR ATTENDANCE at worship today and your participation at Holy Communion by completing the enclosed Worship Registration form and placing it in the offering plate. Please join us for fellowship and refreshments in the lounge after the service. THERE ARE CHILDREN’S BAG with bulletins and books available in the lounge and the narthex. They are hanging on the wall. LARGE-PRINT BULLETINS are available for your use during the worship service. You may pick one up in the lounge. CHILD CARE is available in the Nursery for children of any age. Ask the usher for directions. OUR PRAYERS are for our homebound, and for those in need of healing in body, mind or spirit. We also pray for the men and women of SHARE/WHEEL during this time that they are without shelter. TEXTS FOR NEXT SUNDAY: Acts 4:5-12, 1 John 3:16-24; John 10:11-18. 2 Earth Sunday April 24, 2016 Improvisation on “Gather Us In” Prelude Welcome & Announcements Service of Confession & Absolution Confession P: With the raising of Jesus from the dead, God has demonstrated the same authority and power that God used to create the heavens and the earth. As citizens on this planet, we have done our fair share to destroy this planet. However, with the resurrection of Jesus, we have been given a new lease on life to amend our ways and join in making all things new. Therefore, we make confession to God and to one another and anticipate the peace that Jesus offered to his disciples. (Silent Confession) P: Gracious and merciful God, All: We confess to you that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our entire being. We have not loved our neighbors, including all of your earthly creatures, as we have been loved by you. We live to satisfy our wants, our desires, our appetites, our security needs, and our self-preservation—all of which are a good and righteous part of our humanity until others suffer as a result. Forgive our pride, our fear, our greed, our envy, and our hostility that contribute to the way that we fail to care for your good creation. Restore in us a righteous spirit and the peace that Jesus offers with the forgiveness of all of our sins. Absolution P: God who is gracious, merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love has heard your confession and grants you a new birth with the forgiveness of all of your sins. You may live on with the hope of a renewed life and with the indescribable and glorious joy and peace that is evidence of God’s salvation. C: Amen. Service of Holy Communion (Please stand as you are able) Processional Hymn “Here in This Place” (Face the cross as it is carried forward) 3 Blue Hymnal #718 Call to Worship P: We gather to worship God, our Creator, and sing praises to God’s holy name. C: Every day is a day to celebrate God’s creation. P: We gather to remember the goodness of God’s creation, and give thanks to God for the bounty of the earth. C: Every day is a day to remember God’s goodness. P: We gather to revel in the beauty of the mountains, the sea, the forests, and all living creatures of the Pacific Northwest. C: Every day is a day that we have the privilege of dwelling in the presence of God, our Creator and Sustainer. P: We gather to recommit ourselves to justice and peace in all the earth. C: Every day is a day to strive for justice and peace in all the earth. P: We gather to give glory to God for God’s continuing creation of new heavens and a new earth. C: We join together in our praise to God forever and ever. Amen. Hymn of Praise “In the Presence of Your People” Blue Hymnal #720 Prayer of the Day A: Let us pray together: C: Creator God, you have made us and all living creatures that inhabit this earth. We give thanks to you for our life and for all of the ways that you nurture our lives with the abundance of this earth. Fill us with your Spirit so that we may walk daily in the newness of life by putting our trust in you for our daily bread and for all that we need to be sustained in this life. Keep us ever faithful in our mission to strive for justice and peace in all the earth. We pray in the name of our Bread of Life and Prince of Peace. Amen. (Please be seated) First Lesson Acts 11:1-18 Now the apostles and the believers who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also accepted the word of God. So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticized him, saying, "Why did you go to uncircumcised men and eat with them?" Then Peter began to explain it to them, step by step, saying, "I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision. There was something like a large sheet coming down from heaven, being lowered by its four corners; and it came close to me. As I looked at it closely I saw four-footed animals, beasts of prey, reptiles, and birds of the air. I also heard a voice saying to me, ‘Get up, Peter; kill and eat.' But I replied, ‘By no means, Lord; for nothing profane or unclean has ever entered my mouth.' But a second time the voice answered from heaven, ‘What God has made clean, you must not call profane.' This happened three times; then everything was pulled up again to heaven. At that very moment three men, sent to me from Caesarea, arrived at the house where we were. The Spirit told me to go with them and not to make a distinction between them and us. These six brothers also accompanied me, and 4 we entered the man's house. He told us how he had seen the angel standing in his house and saying, ‘Send to Joppa and bring Simon, who is called Peter; he will give you a message by which you and your entire household will be saved.' And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them just as it had upon us at the beginning. And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said, "John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.' If then God gave them the same gift that he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could hinder God?" When they heard this, they were silenced. And they praised God, saying, "Then God has given even to the Gentiles the repentance that leads to life." L: Holy Wisdom. Holy Word. C: Thanks be to God. Psalm Hymn “A New Commandment” Blue Hymnal #664 Second Lesson Revelation 21:1-6 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "See, the home of God is among mortals. God will dwell with them; they will be God’s peoples. God will be with them and will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away." And the one who was seated on the throne said, "See, I am making all things new." Also he said, "Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true." Then he said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life.” L: Holy Wisdom. Holy Word. C: Thanks be to God. (Please stand) Gospel Acclamation “Halle, Halle, Hallelujah” Blue Hymnal #612 Gospel John 13:31-35 When Judas had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Humanity has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him at once. Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Judeans so now I say to you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.' I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." 5 P: The Gospel of the risen Christ. C: Thanks be to God. (Please be seated) Sermon (Please stand) Hymn of the Day “Lord, Let My Heart Be Good Soil” Green Hymnal #713 Affirmation of Faith We believe that God creates all things, renews all things and celebrates all things. We believe the Earth is a sanctuary, a sacred planet filled with God’s presence, and a home for us to share with our kin. We believe that God became a part of the Earth by taking on flesh and blood in the form of a human being named Jesus, who lived, breathed and spoke among us, and who suffered and died on a cross for all human beings and for all creation. We believe that the risen Jesus is the Christ at the core of creation reconciling all things to God, renewing all creation, and filling the cosmos with God’s love. We believe that the Spirit renews life in creation, groans in empathy with a suffering creation, and waits with us for the rebirth of all creation when we all will rise with Christ and rejoice in the salvation of our God. Amen. Prayers of the People Exchange of Peace P: The peace of God be with you always. C: And also with you. (Please be seated) Children’s Sermon Offering/Musical Offering “When My Lips Can Frame No Sound” When my lips can frame no sound, Savior, be my faith’s sure ground. When my eyes no longer see, May my spirit rest in Thee. When my ears no longer hear, May my spirit know Thee near. Lord, I trust my soul to Thee; May thy love abide with me. 6 Jay Althouse O send Thy guidance from above, O Lord. Hear us as we humbly pray. May we know Thy love and kindness every day. Now with all Thy saints above Let me praise thy boundless love. Let my conscience deep within Know that I am cleansed from sin. (Please stand) Offertory Hymn “All Things Bright and Beautiful” Blue Hymnal #767 (verses 1-2) Offertory Prayer A: Let us pray together: C: God, our Creator and Sustainer, you have blessed us with what we need to live in this world. In gratitude, we offer to you our praise and thanksgiving and these fruits of our labor for the ministry of this congregation, the sustenance of humankind, and the care of your creation. Nourish us with this holy meal so that we will be free to share our daily bread with those in need and liberate those who are impoverished and without the basic necessities of life. We pray in the name of Jesus, the risen One. Amen. Eucharistic Prayer P: Holy God, our Creator and Source of Life, you have placed us in the midst of a creation where we are meant to dwell in peace. The air, the water, the plants, and the animals all have their purpose in the harmony of nature. Our human nature presents a challenge to this creation because of our tendency to take things for ourselves and use them for our own benefit. You chose Israel and Judah to be nations that could model a Sabbath economy in which there was an equitable distribution of land and resources so that no one would have to go without food or drink. When these nations failed in this regard, you sent prophets to call the people back to an ethic of justice and righteousness. Likewise, you sent Jesus to your chosen people to proclaim the good news of your reign and recall for them the importance of your Sabbath economics. However, Jesus extended this message to all people. Everywhere that Jesus went, anyone who was in need of your love and peace was welcomed into Jesus’ presence. The liberation and salvation of all flesh became his mission. 7 In the night in which he was betrayed, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering, therefore, Jesus’ life, death and resurrection, we await your salvation for all people. In the meantime, pour out your Spirit on this holy meal, and on all who gather this day around this table. Renew in us the spirit of life, the breath of fresh air, the power of a flowing stream, and the energy of a fire that will make your reign a reality on this planet. Keep us ever faithful to the One who calls each of us by name, and through whom all honor and glory are yours, both now and forever. C: Amen. Lord’s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. (Please be seated) Communion Distribution “One Bread, One Body” “We All Are One in Mission” “For the Fruit of All Creation” Blue Hymnal #710 Blue Hymnal #755 Blue Hymnal #760 (Please stand) Communion Blessing P: May the body and blood of Jesus, our Christ, unite us as one and raise us up to a new life of service in Jesus’ name. C: Amen. Post Communion Hymn “All Things Bright and Beautiful” 8 Blue Hymnal #767 (verses 3 & 4) Post Communion Prayer A: Let us pray together: C: We give you thanks, ever-creating God, for the blessing of this holy meal. We are your new creation. Send us forth with renewed spirits and with your creative power to make the world a place where your love, justice, peace and freedom reign. Grant us patience and persistence in our mission to reverse the consumptive trends that threaten to destroy this planet. Keep us ever faithful in our mission to follow in the way of Jesus, our Liberator and Savior, in whose name we pray. Amen. Benediction P: Go forth in God’s love to reveal the good news of God in Christ through word and deed. C: We go forth in faith to love as we have been loved and forgive as we have been forgiven. P: Go forth in God’s justice to serve all people following the example of Jesus, our Christ. C: We go forth with courage to feed those who are hungry, provide clean water to those who are thirsty, and offer shelter to those who are homeless. P: Go forth in God’s peace to pursue the things that make for peace in this world. C: We go forth to strive for the equitable distribution of the world’s resources and for the cessation of all wars and violence. P: Go forth in God’s freedom to care for the Earth as God has cared for you. C: We go forth with hope to conserve our use of the Earth’s resources, and in so doing, to serve God, our Creator. Amen.
