World War I Propaganda Project

This project is designed for you to analyze and apply information gained from WWI propaganda
posters/pamphlets. The project is divided into 2 parts: analysis and creation. Please read all of
the information below carefully. You will be broken into 5 teacher-selected groups.
Objectives
The objectives of the propaganda assignment are for you to:
 Understand how governments used propaganda to achieve certain wartime goals.
 Demonstrate knowledge of propaganda techniques.
 Demonstrate knowledge of W.W.I facts.
 Evaluate effectiveness of propaganda posters/pamphlets and techniques.
The Assignment
Part 1: Analyzing CTAP information



Read and analyze the propaganda posters from CTAP V2 chapter 7.
You will be broken into groups of 5.
o In this group will be discussing the following to deconstruct the message as
portrayed in the propaganda.
1. Who is the target audience?
2. Who is being portrayed in the poster? What emotions do the propaganda
posters arouse?
3. What are the core values to which the posters speak?
4. What particular propaganda techniques are used to entice and persuade the
target audience?
Use these results to continue with the second part of the project.
Part 2: Creating your own propaganda posters (4)

Create your own propaganda poster.
o You must have 4 total posters- 30 points each
You want to be focusing on countries other than the US. Look at the other countries
involved in WWI (Germany, Great Brittan, Italy, France, Ireland, Russia, etc…)
Here are the criteria that you must follow to complete the project.
1. Create a bulleted list of 5 to 6 facts on WWI that surround the content of your
poster. Make sure to include country of origin.
2. Provide a description (1 paragraph) of the propaganda poster.
 This should depict what is occurring in the poster. Include the country
of origin, target audience, emotions you want to evoke, and the core
values portrayed in the poster.
3. In 2 to 3 sentences, explain the techniques used to entice the audience and
persuade them.
4. Explain the effectiveness of the propaganda technique used on a given
audience.
