SCIENCE EXPERIMENT
(Use measurable data -this means numbers -not opinion data)
THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD ( Driven by collecting data)
BACKGROUND RESEARCH. Research your topic and write a two or three paragraph
summary of the scientific facts (or more). Explain why you are doing this research project. Your
experiment should have practical use. Include Bibliography. Include 3 sources.
1. QUESTION. What do you hope to find out in this experiment?
2. HYPOTHESIS. What do you think will happen? Based on prior knowledge and research,
explain your prediction. (State your hypothesis and then explain your reasoning for the outcome)
'I think x will happen because...'
3. MATERIALS. (What materials are you using?)
1.
2.
3.

4. PROCEDURES (Steps for the experiment. Be detailed. This is a step by step guide.
Someone needs to be able to follow the steps easily to repeat your experiment.)
1.
2.
etc.
5. RESULTS AND OBSERVATIONS: (This part includes all your data: graphs, data table,
worksheets, pictures, etc. and a sentence or two explaining what is happening.

Make a Data table. Label units and headings.

Make a visual graph bar, line, pie etc.) label the X axis(give the x axis a title),
label the Y axis(give the y axis a title) and Title the whole graph.

Pictures are often helpful/attractive but not required
6. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION:
a.
Review what happened in your experiment. What were some of the problems you
encountered. What did you learn ? Why is your experiment important
knowledge?
b.
State whether or not your hypothesis was supported. Explain. Use Data to support
your (conclusion) answer. Use % and numbers from the data or averages. Is
your conclusion justified by the experiment? Or did you encounter problems
that remain unresolved?
c.
Can you think of a new question about another experiment that would help you
understand this subject better ?
