Pop art is an art movement that appeared in the mid 1950s in Britain and in the late 1950s
in the United States.
Pop art uses typical features of mass culture, such as advertising, comic books and everyday
cultural objects. Pop art isolates the object, or combines it with other objects. It is a reaction to
abstract expressionism. Some people claim it is similar to Dada. Pop art wants to employ/
images of popular culture, emphasizing the banal or kitschy elements of any culture. Pop
artists often use irony.
Eduardo Paolozzi is considered the founder of "pop art" and he is considered to use the
word "pop" the first time. Paolozzi showed the collage .in1952 as part of his Bunk! series
presentation of the Independent Group meeting in London.
The Independent Group (IG), was founded in London in 1952. Some historians say it
influenced Pop art.
They were a group of young painters, sculptors, architects, writers and critics. At the first
Independent Group meeting in1952, co-founding member, artist and sculptor Eduardo
Paolozzi presented a lecture using a series of collages titled Bunk! that he did during his time
in Paris between 1947–1949. This material consisted of objects such as, advertising, comic
book characters, - magazine covers and mass produced graphics that mostly represented American popular culture. One of the images in that presentation was Paolozzi's 1947 collage,
I was a Rich Man's Plaything, which includes the first use of the word "pop″, appearing in a
cloud of smoke from a revolver. The IG focused primarily on American popular culture,
Andy Warhol is probably the most famous figure in Pop Art.
Op art, also known as optical art, is a style of visual art that uses optical illusions. It often
creates effect using lines and different patterns.
Op art works are abstract, often made in only black and white. When the viewer looks at
them, he or she has an impression that the object moves. It is influenced by the Bauhaus
concept.
Land art, Earthworks, or Earth art is an art movement which emerged in the United
States in the late 1960s and early 1970s, in which landscape and the work of art are linked. It
is also an art form that is created in nature, using natural materials such as soil, rock
(boulders, stones), organic media (branches, leaves), and water with materials such as
concrete, metal, asphalt, mineral pigments. The works frequently exist in the landscapes far
from civilization, and they change and erode under natural conditions. Many of the first
works, created in the deserts of Nevada, New Mexico, Utah or Arizona now only exist as
video recordings or photographic documents.
Land art wanted to protest against artificiality and commercialization of art at the end of the
1960s in America. They rejected galleries and museums. Land art was inspired by minimal
art and Conceptual art but also by modern and minimal movements such as De Stijl, cubism,
minimalism and others.
Andy Goldsworthy (*1956) is a British sculptor, photographer and environmentalist
producing specific sculpture and land art situated in natural and urban settings. He lives and
works in Scotland.
The materials used in Andy Goldsworthy's art often include brightly-coloured flowers,
icicles, leaves, mud, pinecones, snow, stone, twigs, and thorns. Goldsworthy often uses
only his bare hands, teeth, and found tools to prepare and arrange the materials.
Photography plays an important role in his art
Arte Povera is a style of modern art. The term was introduced in Italy during the period of
protests at the end of the 1960s, when artists were really radical. Artists began attacking the
values of traditional institutions of government, industry, and culture.
