Atomic Structure Notes
An ___________________ is the smallest unit of an element.
Atoms are made up of three smaller parts (sub-atomic particles):

____________________ = Positive charge. Found inside the nucleus of the atom.

____________________ = No charge. Found inside the nucleus of the atom.

____________________ = Negative charge. Move around the atom outside of the nucleus.
____________________________ = the total number of protons in a nucleus. This number
determines what element the atom is.
(example, silver atoms have 47 protons, so silver has an ________________________ of 47).
____________________________ = The total number of protons + the total number of neutrons in a
nucleus.
(example, silver atoms have 47 protons and 61 neutrons, so silver has an ______________________
of 108).
Atoms normally have the same number of ____________________ as protons.
____________________________ = Atoms of the same element that have different numbers of
neutrons.
(For example, the most common isotope of hydrogen has no neutrons at all; there’s also a hydrogen
isotope called deuterium, with one neutron, and another isotope called tritium, with two neutrons)

Draw a lithium atom (Atomic Number = 3, Atomic Mass = 7)
Draw an oxygen atom (Atomic Number = 8, Atomic Mass = 16)
Draw a potassium atom (Atomic Mass = 19, Atomic Number = 40)
Uranium has an atomic mass of 238 and an atomic number of 92, how many protons does uranium
have?
Einsteinium has an atomic number of 99 and an atomic mass of 252, how many neutrons does
einsteinium have?
Rhodium has an atomic mass of 103 and an atomic number of 45, how many electrons does rhodium
have?
