SCH3U 11 Chemistry: Mole Assignment
The mole is defined as 6.02 x 1023 (just like a dozen is defined as 12). This number is often used to
represent the number of atoms or molecules. For instance, in about 18.02 g of water, there is one mole of
water molecules (i.e. 6.02 x 1023). This is a very large number. Since atoms and molecules are very small
in size, we must work with many of them for every day applications. To better understand the immensity
of this number you will compare it to a common object. For example: If you had a mole of green peas,
they would cover the entire earth one meter deep!!!
Purpose: To make a calculation to represent a mole of some quantity and represent it would a number
that can be grasped (i.e. under 100). You must 1) Give an initial question 2) show your calculations and 3)
give a final statement. Include units in your calculations. See below for an example.
Below are some examples:
- mass of one mole of a substance (how heavy is 1 mole of ipods)
- length of one mole of a common object (how high would one mole of hair stacked one on top
of the other)
- total time to complete one mole of a task (eg. how long to complete on mole of blinking)
- number of a substance (how big is one mole of golf balls)
You must compare your value to something that can be imagined (i.e. compare it to the planet Earth,
distances in space, time to complete the age of the universe…). You final number must be 100 or less.
You will need to research some large quantities.
Example:
1) How far would one mole of rice grains placed end to end stretch?
(Application
/2)
2) Calculations
(Application /10)
1 grain of rice measures 1 cm
1 mole of rice end to end measures 6.02 x 10 23 cm
use unit analysis to calculate the total distance
6.02 x 10 23 cm x
6.02 x 10 21 m x
m
100 cm
km
1000 m
= 6.02 x 10 21 m
= 6.02 x 10 18 km
the diameter of the Milky Way Galaxy is 9.5×1017 km
6.02 x 10 18 km x
diameter of Milky Way
9.5×1017 km
= 6.3 diameters of the milky way
3) Final statement
One mole of rice placed end to end would cover the entire diameter of the Milky Way Galaxy 6.3
times!!!!
(Application /3)
