PART 2 COGNITIVE AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT IN ADOLESCENCE
SQR3 – Survey, Question, Read, Recite and Review
Many teachers while preparing students for study at college recommend SQR3 system for
academic reading. This system helps you perform a series of tasks before reading, while
reading and after reading that help you understand and remember what they have read.
1. Now before you read the text on pages 57-60 closely survey it, look at titles,
headings, subheadings, graphs, pictures, terms in bold or italics and skim through
the text.
2. Now try to formulate questions that you think the text will answer.
3. Finally read the text and take notes while reading.
4. Now you should recite – say aloud from memory what was the most important in
the text – try to do it after reading each section.
5. Now review – go back and skim the text, placing a check (V) next to the parts of
the text that you are sure you understand and a questions mark (?) next to those
parts that are still unclear to you and that you need to study further.
6. Study Vocabulary Explanation 2 and then go back to the text and see whether you
can answer all the question marks that you placed in the text.
