The War to End All Wars had ended with the signing of the ______________________. Then the
unthinkable happened, the world started heading towards another major war. It began with
dissatisfaction with the end of the last war. Then there was a world-wide Depression. A strong leader
came to power in Italy, *__________________________ began the Fascist Party and was named to lead
the Italian government. He eventually received the title of ______________________. Italy was longing
for a colony, therefore Italy invaded and occupied the African country of ________________________.
In Germany, *_________________________ was a leader in the Nazi Party and was named
Chancellor. He eventually received the title of ________________. The desire for all
________________________________ to live in Germany was the excuse Germany needed to become
aggressive.
One of the first occasions for Germany to show it’s military might was in the Spanish Civil
War. The Nationalist were lead by ___________________________. He received support from Nazi
Germany. The United States supported the __________________. The Germans used the Spanish Civil
War to experiment with new military techniques. In one such incident, the Spanish town of
*_______________________ was targeted. The destruction of the town was immortalized in a famous
painting by _____________________.
Hitler began his aggressive expansion by moving his military into the _________________. This
was seen as aggression towards France by most of the world. However, Hitler only received a
reprimand. In 1938, Germany annexed Austria, which is known as the ______________________. Hitler
then requested to take the area of the _____________________ in Czechoslovakia. The leaders of Europe
meet at the ______________________________________ to discuss Hitler’s request. His request was
granted due to the fact that most of the leaders of Europe feared another war and were following a
policy of *__________________________. The Prime Minister of Great Britain
*______________________________ returned from this meeting and announced that there would be
“peace in our time.”
Hitler realized that Germany was moving towards war. He feared the possibility of a twofront war, like World War I. In order to avoid this, Germany signed a
__________________________________ with the Soviet Union. The agreement officially stated that the
two countries would not get involved if the other went to war with a third party and that Germany and
the Soviet Union would divide Poland. The dictator of the Soviet Union was
*_________________________________.
The patience of the European leaders ended with the Germany’s invasion of _________________
on ________________. Great Britain and France declared war on Germany. The Axis Powers were
*_________________________, *________________________, and *______________________________. Many
countries fell to a style of warfare that emphasized a lighting war, also known as
_____________________. Germany took over the lowlands before moving onto France. France fell
quickly to the Nazis, partly due to the false security that the __________________________ provided.
The German army swung through the lowland countries and attacked from behind the massive
fortification. Since the guns were mounted in concrete facing the German border the system of defense
was useless. The USSR took its share of Poland, then took the Baltic Countries of __________________,
______________________ and ___________________.
After *_________________________, the first major European country fell to the Nazis, the
Germans violated the Non-Aggression Pact. In Operation ___________________, the Germans invaded
the USSR. Initially there were German successes as the Red Army retreated. However the Nazis were
then faced with the biggest obstacle when an army invades the USSR, which is Soviet
___________________. This decimated the Nazi troops. Stalin pleaded with England to open up a
second front in Europe. England had its own battles to fight. Hitler wanted to invade England, but
knew there would need to be an extensive bombing campaign first. This campaign is known as the
Battle of _______________________. The ________________________ of England fought the
______________________ of Germany in a series of air battles. The Prime Minister of England
______________________________ through out most of the war said of the English pilots that fended off
the German bombers that “never have so many benefited from the service of so few.”
By this time, the sleeping giant had been awakened. The US had been staying out of the
affairs of Europe. The Congress passed the *_______________________, to ensure that the US would not
become involved. However after the war in Europe began, and France fell so quickly to the Nazis, the
Congress reviewed its policy. A new act was passed, the *_______________________, which meant that
the US would now provide aid to the Allies. The Japanese had been following a policy of expansion for
a number of years in Asia. This expansion had offended the United States, which had been trading
partners of the Japanese. Once the United States threatened to cut Japan from oil and steel shipments
if Japan did not cease its expansion, then Japan knew that if there were to be a war with the US then
Japan must strike first. Therefore on *______________________________, Japan launched a surprise
attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii (which was a territory, but not a state). The US President
*_____________________________________ announced that this was a “day that shall live in infamy,”
then declared war on Japan. Promptly, Germany and Italy declared war on the US.
After the US entered the war, the tide of the war began to change. The turning point on the
North African front was the outstanding tank Battle of *______________________, between the German
General __________________________ and the British General ___________________________. The
turning point on the Soviet front was the Battle of *________________________________, which the
Soviet leader was determined to win (because its just embarrassing to lose towns named after you).
The Italian people helped to turn the tide on the Italian front. Disgusted with war, the people found
Mussolini (and his mistress) dragged him from his car, beat him, shot him and hung him upside down
in the town square. The women of the town (how do you say this politely), well treated him like a dog
would a hydrant. This opened southern Italy to an invasion from Allied forces, led by the US.
The first major assault into western Europe, was on the beaches of
*____________________________ on the date of *_____________________________ which is known as
*__________________________. This invasion was led by the American General
*_________________________. This attack into Nazi occupied France was successful but deadly. The
leader of southern France, which was also known as *_________________________, (named after the new
capital city) was lead by *________________________________. He has been accused of collaborating
with the Nazis. But another group in France, proved to be invaluable,
*________________________________ led by *_______________________________. This underground group
helped to provide secret information to the Allied forces and to cut telegraph lines just prior to the
Allied invasion. By ___________________________, V-E Day was being celebrated. But victory was not
complete.
The turning point in the Pacific arena was the Battle of *_________________________. After
that point the Japanese were on the defensive. The American forces were pushing to mainland Japan.
Several military analysts were working on invasion plans. However after the Battles of
___________________________ and ______________________________, it became obvious that the
Japanese would fight to the last man (after all the number that died to defend insignificant islands led
the analyst to believe that millions would have to die defending the Japanese homeland). When the US
President died and was replaced by *____________________________, he was informed of the US’s atomic
capability. Japan was warned to surrender. The warning went unheeded. The first atomic bomb was
dropped on the city of ______________________________ on ______________
__________. Japan did
not surrender. The second atomic bomb was dropped on __________________________ on
__________________________. A few days after that the Japanese Emperor
*_____________________________ informed the Japanese military commander
*__________________________ that Japan should unconditionally surrender. The official surrender was
signed aboard the *_______________________________________.
After the war, the countries of the world replaced the League of Nations with the
*______________________________. With the Allied countries serving as permanent members of the
