MAIN STREET ACADEMY LESSON PLAN 2014-2015 Teacher: B. Davis Period(s): 2nd, 3rd, 4th Startdate:1/5/2015 End date:1/9/2015 State competency goal and objective: Bio.3.5 Analyze how classification systems are developed upon speciation. Bio.3.5.1 Explain the historical development and changing nature of classification systems. Bio.3.5.2 Analyze the classification of organisms according to their evolutionary relationship (including dichotomous keys and phylogenetic trees). Bio.2.1 Analyze the interdependence of living organisms with their environments. Bio.2.1.1 Analyze the flow of energy and cycling of matter (such as water, carbon, nitrogen and oxygen) through ecosystems relating the significance of each to maintaining the health and sustainability of an ecosystem. EEn.2.6 Analyze patterns of global climate change over time. EEn.2.6.1 Differentiate between weather and climate. EEn.2.6.2 Explain changes in global climate due to natural processes. EEn.2.6.3 Analyze the impacts that human activities have on global climate change (such as burning hydrocarbons, greenhouse effect, and deforestation). EEn.2.6.4 Attribute changes to Earth’s systems to global change (temperature change, changes in pH of ocean, sea level changes). PSc.3.3 Understand electricity and magnetism and their relationship. PSc.3.3.1 Summarize static and current electricity. PSc.3.3.2 Explain simple series and parallel DC circuits in terms of Ohm’s Law. PSc.3.3.3 Explain how current is affected by changes in composition, length, temperature, and diameter of wire. PSc.3.3.4 Explain magnetism in terms of domains, interactions of poles and magnetic fields. PSc.2.1 Understand types, properties, and structure of matter. PSc.2.1.1 classify matter as homogeneous or heterogeneous, pure substances or mixture, element or compound, metals or nonmetals. PSc.2.1.2 Explain the phases of matter and the physical changes that matter undergoes. PSc.2.1.3 Compare physical and chemical properties of varies types of matter EQ: Biology- Why are classification systems important in Biology and who was responsible for the developing the first system? How can using dichotomous keys and phylogentic trees be useful when classifying organisms? How does the water, carbon, nitrogen and oxygen cycle relate to ecology? What is the relationship between, predation, competition, parasitism, commensalism, and mutualism? Earth/Environmental – How is weather and climate different and how are they similar? How is the change in global climate related to natural processes? What type of impact has human activities had on climate change? How has temperature change, changes in the pH of oceans and sea level changes affected global climate change? Physical Science – How is static electricity and current electricity different and how are they similar? How are a parallel circuit and a series different and how are they similar? How are electrical currents related to Ohm’s Law? What is the relationship between magnetism and electricity? What is the relationship between a homogeneous and heterogeneous substance? How are physical properties of a substance different and how are they different? Literacy enhancements/Key Vocabulary: reading and critical, inquiry based learning hands-on activities. Bio – vocabulary: dichotomous keys, phylogenetic trees, classification, ecology, adaptations, stability, predation, completion, parasitism, commensalism, mutualism, population, species, community, environment, sustainability, and habitat. Earth/Environmental – vocabulary: weather, climate, temperature, pH, hydrocarbons, greenhouse effect, deforestation, natural processes, temperate, tropical, polar and carbon dioxide. Physical Science – vocabulary: static, current, parallel circuit, series circuit, direct current, alternating current, potential difference, volts, amperes, electromagnetism, conduction, friction, conductor, insulator, heterogenous, homogenous, pure substance, element, compound, solution, colloid, suspensions, solutions, Bohr model diagrams, and Lewis dot diagrams Adaptations/Differentiation: extended time, modified assignment, group work, read out loud assignments, inquiry based assignments, labs and hands-on activities. Lesson steps: 1. Start the lesson Review and focus- . Students will review previous material by completing warm-ups and answering questions orally. Students will focus on new material, essential question and connect new material with previous material. 2. Presentation Teacher input- The teacher will explain and demonstrate the subject of each lesson. The teacher will explain the expectations of each assignment and provide each student with the necessary materials to complete each assignment. 3. Guided practice Students will complete in class assignments and hands-on activities with minimal input from the teacher. The teacher will check for student understanding by checking student work and asking the student critical thinking question. The teacher will guide the student through the inquiry base assignments and questions. 4. Independent practice Students will be give assignments and asked to answer questions pertaining to the lesson. Students will be required to give their input about the lesson. Students will be required to complete formal assessments. 5. Evaluation/Summarizing strategies: The teacher will check student work for accuracy and completion. The teacher will discuss the work completed with the students and make comments and suggestions to the students. 6. Closure Have students relate essential question to the lesson. Students will complete any unfinished work for homework.
