SDS Submission Guidelines for Chemicals/Lubes/RP’s Protocol Overview: Numerous Polaris production processes rely on the ability to fully clean metal to remove oils, soils and contaminants in the existing cleaning washers. Therefore, suppliers of incoming materials and products are obligated to utilize chemicals that comply with general lubrication guidelines and provide complete SDS (formally MSDS) documentation as proof of that compliance. Approval of candidate lubricants and all other chemicals shall be processed via SDS Submission on the Polaris Supplier Information System site (www.polarissuppliers.com). *SDS submission should be completed by a authorized representative. Acronyms DOT GHS HAPS HCS HMIS HMIG SDS MEK NFPA OSHA PPE SARA 313 TDS VOC Department of Transportation Global Harmonization System Hazardous Air Pollutants Hazard Communication Standard, OSHA Hazardous Materials Information System Hazardous Material Identification Guide Safety Data Sheet (formally MSDS) Methyl Ethyl Ketone National Fire Protection Agency Occupational Safety and Health Administration Personal Protective Equipment Superfunds Amendment and Re-authorization Act Technical Data Sheet, also known as Technical Information Sheet, Technical Summary Volatile Organic Compound Manufacturing/Cleaning Focus All lubricants should be water soluble to allow removal via aqueous cleaning systems and lowfoaming when exposed to aqueous cleaning processes. All Cleaners/Rust Preventives (RP’s) should be synthetic/water soluble and low-foaming. No paraffin or waxes, chlorinated paraffins, sulfurized oils or “heavy metal” components shall be used for lubricity. No silicones or pseudo-silicones can be utilized as lubricants or components of lubrication systems. This includes PTFE’s and “Teflon” type lubricants. Fatty acid or “soap type” lubricants should be avoided. Lubricants and Cleaners/Rust Preventives should be applied as a thin film. No pooling, lacquering or congealing of lube is allowed. Lubricants and Cleaners/Rust Preventives should be low or non-smoking when heated or welded on. After application of the Cleaner/Rust Preventive, parts should be water-break free and have no visible soils present If parts are treated with a Cleaner/Rust Preventive, they must be acceptable in cleanliness and free of rust prior to the next manufacturing step Parts treated with a Cleaner/RP must be dry prior to packaging Safety Focus Along with the GHS requirements, both the NFPA Hazard Identification System (HIS) and the Hazardous Material Identification Guide (HMIG or HMIS) may be used to comply with the labeling requirement of the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard (HCS). Chemicals/Lubes/RP’s should have a pH between 3-11. Any product outside this range is subject to additional safety review. Chemicals/Lubes/RP’s should have a flashpoint greater than 100°F (38°C). Any chemicals with flashpoints above 140°F (60°C) are discouraged. Any product outside these requirements is subject to additional safety review. Please review this relative to Cleaner/RPs – many of the synthetics have no FP or they’re greater than 200F. Chemicals/Lubes/RP’s should have a DOT or HMIS health hazard rating of 1 or less. Lubes/RP’s with hazard ratings of greater than 1 will require a special Polaris Team review. Health Hazard Ratings 4 – Extreme: Highly toxic – May be Fatal on short-term exposure. Special protective equipment required. 3 – Serious: Toxic – Avoid inhalation or skin contact. 2 – Moderate: Moderately Toxic – May be harmful if inhaled or absorbed. 1 – Slight: Slightly toxic – May cause slight irritation. 0 – Minimal: All chemicals have some degree of toxicity. Flammability Hazard Rating 4 – Extreme: Extremely flammable gas or liquid – Flash Point below 73°F. 3 – Serious: Flammable – Flash Point 73°F to 100 °F. 2 – Moderate: Moderate – Combustible – Requires moderate heating to ignite. Flash Point 100°F to 200 °F. 1 – Slight: Slightly Combustible – requires strong heating to ignite. 0 – Minimal: Will not burn under normal conditions. Reactivity Hazard Rating 4 – Extreme: Explosive at room temperature. 3 – Serious: May explode if shocked, heated under confinement or mixed with water. 2 – Moderate: Unstable – may react with water. 1 – Slight: May react if heated or mixed with water. 0 – Minimal: Normally stable – does not react with water.
