French revolution began 1789, inspired by the American Revolution. Uprising against
Louis XVI.
Pre revolutionary French parliament was divided into 3 ‘estates’ the clergy, the
nobility and the commoners.
In 1789, the third estate organized themselves as the national assembly. Created the
Declaration of the Rights of man and Citizen. This launched the revolution.
1793 Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were executed.
1793-1794—Reign of Terror under the leadership of Maximilien Robespierre and the
Committee of public safety. Ended when Robespierre was executed because of
tyranny and dictatorship.
Festival of Unity in 1793 to mark the first anniversary of the end of the monarchy.
Napoleon Bonaparte—1799-1814. Tamed the revolution and preserved civil equality,
a secular law code, religious freedom and promotion by merit.
