Lesson 1-3
Example 1 Use Order of Operations
Find the value of 7 + 3  6.
7 + 3  6 = 7 + 18
= 25
Multiply 3 and 6 first.
Add 7 and 18.
Example 2 Use Order of Operations
Find the value of 18 – 7 + 4.
18 – 7 + 4 = 11 + 4
= 15
Subtract 7 from 18 first.
Add 11 and 4.
Example 3 Parentheses and Exponents
Find the value of 36  9 + 12  (7 – 5).
36  9 + 12  (7 – 5) = 36  9 + 12  2
= 4 + 12  2
= 4 + 24
= 28
Example 4 Parentheses and Exponents
Find the value of 4 × 33 + 5.
4 × 33 + 5 = 4 × 27 + 5
= 108 + 5
= 113
Find 33.
Multiply 4 and 27.
Add 108 and 5.
Subtract 5 from 7.
Divide 36 by 9.
Multiply 12 by 2.
Add 4 and 24.
