World War 1 Group Presentations For this unit each of you will be assigned to teams and topics covering different areas of WW1. These are detailed topics and roles for each of you to follow. You must work together as a team to complete your presentation and also be prepared to present on your assigned day. This is a great way for you to get involved and learn about WW1. Each team will create a power point presentation about your assigned topic. You will have plenty of time in class to research and create your presentation. In your groups each person will be assigned a specific role with specific duties within the topic. 1) Q/A- this person will be responsible for answering the questions given to your topic. The questions and answers must be given at the end of your presentation, much like a review. Along with your assigned questions, this person must create an additional 5 questions about your topic and the information your team researched. 2) Videographer- this person will find maps, videos, and visuals related to your topic. Find videos that are 3 minutes or less. Your entire presentation CANNOT be videos. Choose and use them wisely. Find pictures, political cartoons or any kind of visual that can add depth and a better understanding of your topic. You must make sure all videos can play in your presentation and have sound. 3) Researcher- this person will research all of the areas of your topic, those that are given and additional areas your group will add to. This is the note giving portion of your presentation. This is where they class will get their notes from. You are responsible for making sure all of the questions for the notes that you are given are answered and correct. The questions are not to be answered like the handout given but in a creative, informative way in your presentation. Yes you need to make sure they are in order of the notes provided but not in a typical question answer format. That is what the Q/A is doing. 4) Floater- Your role is too assist any of the other team members who need help in answering or creating questions, finding visuals or creating notes. You will have to do a little bit of everything, so you must remain on your toes. You will also be responsible for finding 1 primary source to help add depth and understanding to your group. The primary source must be used in your presentation and discussed why it is being used and what it shows. 5) Captain- this person will make sure all group members are staying on task and assist in ALL areas. You also be in charge of putting the presentation together. Your 3 or 4 team members will provide you with the information you need. Of course, your team members can assist and give input as well. Once completed, you will save your presentation on your school number. Due Date- On Friday, March 21, 2014, each group will turn in their completed presentation. Each group’s presentation will be saved from the Captain’s number to Coach Fox’s laptop. This is the only presentation you will use when you are presenting. ALL presentations are due the same day!!! Once all presentations have been saved, group 1 will begin and we will proceed in order. If your group needs copies of anything for the class, we need them by Thursday in order for us to make copies. If we don’t have them by Thursday, you will not have them or have to make copies yourself. All group members must participate during the presentation. Make sure everyone knows their role during the presentation as well, so it will run smoothly. Group 1: Choosing Sides and War Plans The following will help guide you to make sure you presentation is corrective, informative and complete. Notes 1. Find a map of Europe in 1914 before the war broke out. Show all countries in Europe that are going to be part of the war and those who play a role in the war beginning.(class will complete a blank map) 2. Identify the 6 major Allied Powers, and the 3 major Central Powers. 3. What were the central powers and the allies called BEFORE the war? 4. Identify the leaders of the above countries and any other key people. 5. Which side did the United States eventually join? Why? 6. Which country switched sides just before the war started? Why? 7. List AND describe the four long-term causes of World War I. (For the causes of war use…M.A.I.N.) 8. What was the spark that led to the immediate cause of World War I? (Fifth cause of war) 9. Who was General Schlieffen and what was his plan for World War I? What was his country trying to avoid by implementing this plan? Questions . List AND describe these 5 weapons introduced in World War I. Be sure to explain their effectiveness and how they are used. (Poisonous gas, submarine, machine gun, tank, airplane) 2. What is propaganda? What were 4 reasons propaganda posters were used? 3. What nation produced the most posters throughout World War I? 4. What does “total war” mean during WW1? 5. Define rationing. What were trenches? Why were they built during WW1? 2. Where were they built? What was this stretch of land called? 3. The battlefield between Germany and Russia was called what? Why were trenches not built here? 4. What is trench foot? What caused trench foot? 5. What affects did it have on the body? What was the remedy for it? 6. Find diary entries from both sides of the war. Then show and discuss the similarities and differences of the 2 sides. a. Describe some common repetitive (repeated) themes (tasks) of trench life. b. Define stalemate. How does the definition of this word describe life in the trenches? 7. Explain what No Man’s Land was? (Be sure to describe at least 3 distinct features.) Verdun- When did this occur, Who fought, Where did the fighting take place, and What was the impact of this battle? 5.
