A Personalized Library Resources Word Document with Hyperlinks
For this portfolio requirement you will create a “Personal Library Resources Page” in
Microsoft Word. This document will contain hyperlinks to important resources available
on-line. A good understanding of what library resources are available will be reflected in
a student’s Personal Library Resources Page. The document for the portfolio
requirement must contain links to:
i. The library home page http://library.shu.edu
ii. SetonCat - the Electronic Card Catalog
iii. The databases page- There are several databases that allow researchers to search for
articles, books and other reference materials. For psychology the main databases
are “PsycInfo” and “PsycArticles”. To find these databases go to the library
home page. (Note: I recommend that you do this while you are ON CAMPUS so
that you do not need to enter a password to see the databases. If you want to
access these databases off campus you will need to click the off-campus access
and get yourself the passwords; see the library web site for more details). Under
“Articles/Journals” click on “databases”. Under “Search List” click “Topical”;
scroll down and look for “Psychology”. Listed under psychology are the
“PsycInfo” and “PsycArticles” databases. Make a hyperlink to this page on your
“Personal Library Resources Page”. While you are here investigate the two
databases and try to determine how they differ and what you can access with
them. Try searching for a topic in Psychology (e.g., “false memory”) and see
what you get.
iv. The e-journals page.
v. MyLibrary links (to view your account and request interlibrary loan)
vi. Resources relevant to any of your other interests
vii. Links to Internet search engines (e.g., Google, Yahoo)
Create your Personalized Library Resources page as follows:
1. Open a fresh page in Word and add a title to the page “My Personalized Library
Resources Page”
2. Now you are ready to search for a resource.
3. Minimize the Word window and open your Web Browser (Make sure you are
connected to the Internet). IMPORTANT: Do not go to the Library Home Page
while you are in BlackBoard, otherwise the links may not work. Open your Web
Browser (Microsoft Internet Explorer is recommended) and go directly to
http://library.shu.edu. Your BlackBoard page has a convenient link to the library,
but copying and pasting the URLs to Word will cause problems.
4. Go to the Library home page at http://library.shu.edu .Click your way to the first
resource, for example SetonCat - the electronic card catalog. Once you are at the
desired Web Page copy the URL in the address window (use CTRL + C) and
minimize your browser.
5. Maximize the Word document again and on a new line type "SetonCat" followed
by a brief description of what it is.
6. Now you need to create the hyperlink. Select the word "SetonCat” and select
Insert | Hyperlink from the standard menu. Paste (use CTRL + v) the URL that
you copied previously into the box labeled “Type the File or Web Page Name”
and click OK.
7. You now have a hyperlink to go directly to SetonCat.
8. Look for the other required resources and follow the previous steps to include
links in your page (see my own library resource page below as an example)
9. Continue until you have included all of the required links as well as any other
links that you believe may be a useful for your library research.
Click here Click here to see an example of my own "Library Resources Page".
My page is more elaborate than needed for this assignment but it provides an
example of this useful resource. (For this link to work you will need to be
connected to the Internet).
