3. Title of the Bilateral Cooperation Project (in English) : Research and Evidences of Traditional
Medicine in Cancer Treatment: Development of Parameters in Traditional Medicine Research
Title of the Bilateral Cooperation Project (in Thai) :
การวิจัยและหลักฐานเชิงประจักษ์ของการแพทย์ดั้งเดิมกับการรักษาผู้ป่วยมะเร็ง:
การพัฒนาพารามิเตอร์ที่ใช้ในการวิจัยการแพทย์ดั้งเดิม
4. Sector of the Bilateral Cooperation Project :
Public Health
5. Background and Rational :
Cancer is considered as a major health problem around the world. Around tens of
millions of people are diagnosed with cancer each year. The main goals of a cancer
diagnosis and treatment are to cure or considerably prolong the life of patients and to
ensure the best possible quality of life to cancer survivors. However, the number of cancer
mortality is still high. World Health Organization (WHO) reported that approximately 8.2
million deaths from worldwide cancer in 2012. Ministry of Public Health of Thailand is
aware of cancer impact on Thai society as well. In order to develop the best health care
system for cancer patients, the Ministry of Public Health promotes participation of all
sectors to resolve cancer problem.
In order to do the research effectively, it is necessary to cooperate with related and
skilled agencies to organize research professionally so that everyone receives maximum
benefits from it. In May 2016, Thai Traditional Medicine Institute had a discussion with
Yunnan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (YUTCM) about personnel exchange
program, Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and research cooperation under Thai
government funding, which Yunnan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine
recommended Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and stated that
Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine is renowned in traditional Chinese
medicine field and has numerous outstanding researches about traditional Chinese
medicine with cancer.
Since 2011, Thai Traditional Medicine Research Institute (TTMRI) under the
Department for Development of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine, Ministry of
Public Health, has conducted researches of Traditional Thai Herbal Formularies with
cancer, for example, Bencha-Ammarith formulary with liver cancer and N040 formulary
with cervical cancer etc. The main problem that we have confronted is that by using
western research approach and concentrated on single western diagnoses treated with one
Traditional Thai formula does not represent the real efficacy of Traditional treatment.
Also the assessment of specific parameters of Traditional medicine has to be taken into
account.
Therefore, Thai Traditional Medicine Research Institute (TTMRI) is willing to
organize research collaboration project with Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese
Medicine for observation and exchanging knowledge and experience on traditional
medicine research with cancer as well as develop specific parameters for traditional
medicine research in cancer treatment. In order to conduct effective clinical research and
highlighted for the highest benefit and best quality to cancer patients, an official
collaboration between TTMRI and Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine
should be considered.
6. Purposes of the Bilateral Cooperation Project:
1. Sharing the experiences and applications of Traditional Medicine in Cancer
2. Developing the specific parameters for Traditional Medicine Research in cancer
treatment
7. Proposed Activities :
1.) Academic session
2.) University, hospital and research (study) - site visiting
3.) Cooperative meeting
8. How would the proposed activity be integrated into the work plan and mechanism
of the requesting organization to ensure sustainability?
TTMRI is now conducting the TTM research with cancer. Therefore, we started
the cooperation between Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and
TTMRI with the invitation of the professor and team from Longhua hospital, Shanghai
University of Traditional Chinese Medicine to share their experiences from researches and
practices to the group of researcher in Thailand during 2017 March, 21-24th followed by
the researcher team visit at Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine to
update the research status of Traditional Thai herbal formularies and gain direct
experiences of TCM research with cancer from the bedside of the patients. Also, the
researcher team of Shanghai will have an official meeting in Thailand to conclude the
result as well as the specific parameters for traditional medicine research in cancer. The
flow of the project is shown below.
21-24th March, 2017
Prof. Yang Jin-Kun and Prof.Shen Ke Ping visit the TTMRI, DTAM
and research site to share their experience and discuss about TM
research in cancer. All the expenses are supported by the DTAM.
DTAM representatives visit Shanghai University of TCM to observe
and study about traditional medicine research. Proposed activity
expects to be supported by TICA. (2 times)
DTAM invite representative from Shanghai University of TCM to join
