UNIT 12 - THE HUMAN BODY
All living things (?!) are composed of _cells__, the basic unit of life. In humans, cells work together to form
_tissues_______.
There are four basic types of tissue:
 Epithelial – _Covers______ and _lines________ the body. May contain _glands_______ for
secretions or cells with _cilia________. Examples includes glands, _skin, blood vessels, respiratory
passageway___________.
 Connective Tissue – Most _abundant__________ tissue in the body. Used as _connectors_______
and for _support, transport, and storage____. Contains a network of non-living material called a
_matrix_____. Examples include bone, _tendons & ligaments_____, _blood__, _fat cells____.
 Muscle Tissue – Able to generate _electrical_______ signals that create _force____ and
_movement________. Found in _skeletal______ muscles, _heart, stomach_______.
 Nerve Tissue – Specialized to generate and _transmit______ electrical signals to _relay______
_information____. Found in _brain_____, _spinal cord, and nerves______.
These tissues work together as _organs____, which work together as _organ systems______.
ORGAN SYSTEMS OF THE HUMAN BODY
Match the description with the correct system using the word bank below.
Circulatory
Digestive
Endocrine
Immune(Lymphatic)
Integumentary
Muscular
Nervous
Reproductive
Respiratory
Skeletal
Urinary (Excretory)

_Nervous________________ System – Receives, processes, transmits information; coordinates systems

_Endocrine______________ System – Regulates homeostasis with chemicals known as hormones.

_Skeletal________________ System – Supports and protects body parts.

_Muscular_______________ System – Produces movement.

_Integumentary__________ System – Physical barrier against pathogens, injury, dehydration.

_Circulatory_____________ System – Transports O2, CO2 , nutrients, wastes.

_Respiratory_____________ System – Responsible for exchange of O2, CO2

_Immune________________ System – Destroys pathogens

_Digestive_______________ System – Breaks down food molecules to absorbable monomers

_Urinary_________________ System – Washes blood; regulates blood volume

_Reproductive____________ System – Produces gametes; site of embryo development in females
The organ systems work together to maintain _homeostasis______ in the organism.
