Anjileen Daji Describe a memorable character in the text. Explain how verbal and/or visual features of the text were used to help you remember this character. In the film ‘The World’s Fastest Indian’, directed by Roger Donaldson, a memorable character in the text was Burt Munro. The use of visual and verbal features emphasises Burt’s passion for speed, and his determination to strive towards achieving his goal, which is to find out just how fast his Indian motorcycle will go. Great introduction – you have linked the key points about memorable character to the ideas of visual and verbal techniques. Right at the start of the film, a verbal feature which was used was the inscription on the shelf of burnt out pistons. ‘Offerings to the god of speed’. This reflects on the one thing that matters most to Burt, and that is his passion for speed. The inscription leads us to believe that Burt considers the sport of motorcycle racing to be somewhat sacred in his mind. Well explained – though tthis could also be a visual technique? The pistons as a visual symbol as well. Shortly after this scene, a visual feature that is used is a tracking shot of Burt sleeping, which then cuts to a long shot of him speeding along Oreti Beach. This feature is used to make it clear to us that Burt is dreaming. It tells us that not only does he live for speed, he is so passionate about it that he also dreams it too. Great link. Another verbal feature used in the film is what Burt says in his dialogue. When the officials at Bonneville will not let Burt run his motorcycle, he says, ‘Everyone wants us old buggers to curl up in some quiet corner and die. Well, Burt Munro’s not ready to finish yet.’ This emphasises Burt’s constant determination to strive towards achieving his goal, no matter what obstacles may come his way. Again well lionked to the topic. Therefore, it is clear that Burt Munro was a memorable character in the film ‘The World’s Fastest Indian’. The verbal and visual features gave me a deeper insight into Burt’s character, such as his extreme passion for speed, and his determination to strive towards achieving his goal. These features helped me to clearly remember Burt’s character, and understand why he was such a memorable character in the film. And a well thought out and explained conclusion that ties together all of the points. Well done – a well structured essay, with supporting evidence and a clear pint of view. Keep up the great efforts. ET5
