-LOGY – Study of
-LOGY at the end of a word usually means study of. Biology [BIO life] is the study of plant and
animal life. Geology [GEO earth] is the study of the history of earth, especially as it is recorded
in rocks. Etymology [ETYM true] is the study of the origin (true meaning) and development of
words. In this vocabulary study, you are getting an introduction to etymology.
ALMOST all such words have an O in front of the –LOGY so that the ending is –OLOGY. But,
two words have A in front of the –LOGY -- genealogy and mineralogy.
Archeology (ahr ke ol’ h je) [ARCH ancient + LOGY study of] – the study of ancient cultures based on
artifacts and other remains. Egypt is a good place to study archeology because the monuments and
artifacts are well preserved.
Anthropology (an thruh pol’ uh je) [ANTHROP human + LOGY study of]-a study of the physical, social,
and cultural development and behavior of human beings. Shanna studied anthropology’s understanding
of Aboriginal society and its traditional gender relations.
Astrology (uh strol’ uh je) [ASTR star + LOGY study of]-a pseudoscience claiming to foretell the future
by a study of the stars. To try to foresee her future, she consulted a book on astrology.
Ecology (e kol’ uh je) [ECO home + LOGY study of]-the study of the relationship between organisms
and their environment (home). The ecology of the region showed that the number of wild animals had
decreased as a result of lumbering.
Embryology (em bre ol’ uh je)-the study of the formation and development of embryos. The science of
embryology has determined the exact times when various parts of an embryo develop.
Entomology (en tuh mol’ uh je) [EN in + TOM to cut + LOGY study of]-the study of insects (whose
bodies are “cut” in three segments. The entomology class was studying grasshoppers.
Etymology (et uh mol’ uh je) [ETYM true + LOGY study of]-the study of the origin (true meaning) and
development of words. From his study of etymology, he learned many interesting word histories.

birds. Because he was interested in ornithology, he made recordings of bird songs.
Psychology (si kol’ uh je) [PSYCH mind + LOGY study of]-the study of mental processes and behavior.
His study of psychology helped him understand himself.
