Communication Studies: Communication Course Requirements 12 hours Communication Core Courses 24 hours Communication Major Courses 6 hours Communication Electives Courses Communication Core Courses COMM 101- Intro to Communication Studies: Offered quarterly. An introduction to basic human communication including interpersonal, small group, intercultural and public communication. COMM 110- Fundamentals of Public Speaking: Offered quarterly. Designed to teach strategies in researching, preparing and extemporaneously delivering oral presentations in typical speaker-audience situations through application in informative and persuasive speaking. COMM 200: Intro to Basic Web Design and Online Media: Basic concepts, nomenclature, software and processes used in the design and creation of websites. Includes introduction to HTML and optimization issues. **OR** COMM 201: Intro to Digital Photography: An introduction to photography using digital cameras, image software and digital printers. COMM 202: Media Literacy: Spring Quarter. Introduction to the world of media, arts, and society with emphasis on critical consumption. Communication Studies Major Courses COMM 203- Interpersonal Communication: Fall Quarter. Study of the verbal and nonverbal dimensions of interpersonal relationships including dialogues, interviews and dyadic systems. COMM 300-Argumentation: Fall Quarter. A study of the principles of group discussion and debate with practical experience in each. COMM 303-Intercultural Communication: Winter Quarter. Explores the variances of communication across cultures with special emphasis on nonverbal messages. Examining the most current theories and strategies for more effective and culturally aware communication. COMM 325- Introduction to Communication Research Methods: Winter Quarter. A study of the goals and methods of research with emphasis on understanding the nature and structure of communication. COMM 431-Organizational Communication: Winter Quarter. Focuses on the factors related to communication processes within government, private, and volunteer organizations. COMM 439-Rhetorical Criticism: Spring Quarter. Rhetorical approaches to the criticism of public communication. Intensive practice in writing rhetorical analyses will be provided. COMM 455-Communication Theory: Fall Quarter. An examination and synthesis of theoretical approaches to contemporary communication theory with special emphasis on interpersonal contexts. COMM 466-Group Processes: Fall Quarter. Theory and practice of conducting group meetings, group discussions, to include parliamentary procedure. Communication Electives COMM 204- Communication Training and Development: Spring Quarter. Critical analysis and practical application of the intersection between communication studies and the development of training initiatives. COMM 211- Advanced Public Speaking: Spring Quarter. Preq., COMM 110 or permission of instructor. This course is centered on developing advanced skills in a greater variety of public speaking situations: manuscript, after dinner speaking, and impromptu. COMM 433-Applied Organizational Communication: Spring Quarter. Application of communication practices in organizational settings including the practical considerations that arise in conducting communication surveys. COMM 315-Survey of Rhetoric: Spring Quarter. The development of responsiveness to prose, poetry, drama, and the ability to communicate the logical, emotional, and aesthetic elements to others. COMM 417-Seminar in Communication: Selected current issues/topics in an identified area of theory or application within the field of Communication Studies.
