Background: While Rome developed its government, the Republic faced challenges from abroad. The
Romans had defeated all those that opposed them in Italy and were now looking to control the Mediterranean
Sea. Unfortunately, for the Romans they were not the only formidable force trying to control the trade routes of
the Mediterranean Sea. Whoever controlled these trade routes would be made into the largest and richest city
along the Mediterranean. Rome would slowly destroy the Carthaginian Empire over a hundred-year span of
time and three wars that came to be known as the Punic Wars.
Your Task: You will take on the role of three different soldiers in the Roman army, one for each war.
You will keep meticulous records that include: the years of the war, who fought in the war, where the war
was fought, the major events, and the outcome. Not only do you keep great records of each war, but you are
also an artist at heart and sketch a scene from each of the three wars below your written commentary (please
describe what the picture is and try to stay away from stick figures – try your best!! ).
Here is how your diary should be set up! Follow the steps!!

Word has reached your ear that the barbarian
Hannibal intends to invade your country. As the
years go by you participate in every major battle
during this second conflict and somehow against
all odds, manage to come out alive. Describe
what you did and saw on one side of your diary,
and draw an illustration on the other.
Third Punic War –
Punic War #1
Punic War # 2
Punic War # 3
You are Lucius, a 49 year old seasoned veteran in
the Roman Legions, one that has seen many years
of combat. Somehow you have managed to stay
alive with no major injuries, but your aging eyes
have not seen the last of battle. You participate in
the third and final conflict with Carthage yet are
mortally wounded. On your deathbed you
describe what you did and saw, and draw an
illustration so that the world will know the glory
of Rome.
