Types of Friction
There are different kinds of friction – today we will do an
investigation with ____________________ – when one object
opposes the movement of another object. You can experience
this type of friction whenever you move a large object over a
rough surface.
Another type of friction is called _______________________usually there is less force needed with this type. Using wheels
helps objects to move easier. The transportation industry has
developed many different types of wheels depending on how much
friction is needed or wanted in certain vehicles.
A third type of friction is called _______________________.
People designing cars use fluid friction to see how air flows
around their proposed design for a new car. If there is less
friction of air resistance around the body of a car the gas
mileage will be better.
The last type of friction is called ______________________ –
this is a type of friction that needs to be overcome before a
large object can be moved. Think of moving a very heavy piece of
furniture – once you have started it moving the force can be a
little less to keep it moving.
Additional information about friction- one must always consider
both surfaces when discussing frictional force and take into
account that some kinetic energy will be changed into
________________ energy as a result of the friction between
the two surfaces involved.
Discussion Questions:
1. Can you explain why one shoe (s) moved easiler over the
roughest surface than the other ones?
2. Examine the surfaces with a hand lens and describe what
you see?
3. From your data determine which surface created the most
frictional force when you moved the shoes over it?
4. What was creating the friction when you rubbed your hands
together? If you do not know look at the surface of your
hands with the hand lens, what do you see?
