Curriculum revision for the Production and Design Program of the BFA in Theatre, submitted October 2013. Multiple adjustments in course numbering, prerequisites and caps to bring curriculum into compliance. Revision of two courses and reintroduction of these courses into the plan of study to better align this program with curricular offerings of other programs of design for stage and screen. Courses revised and reintroduced into plan of study: o Concept and Collaboration for Designers and Directors o Advanced Scenography Studio Curriculum revision for the Production and Design Program of the BFA in Theatre, submitted October 2012. EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY It is my goal as a teacher to promote learning through an active process motivated by perceived need, structured in such a way that the material can be easily grasped, and then facilitated through experience. As a designer, I am most interested in promoting student growth in the area of visual communication and contribute to a visually literate population. Motivation is key in education. Eager readiness, essential to learning, is developed through encouraging learners to analyze their own needs and set their own goals, in specific relationship to the material at hand. The introduction of problems and projects that require students to explore, invent, collaborate and hypothesize are essential elements of each of my courses. Research-based learning opens diverse intellectual channels and stimulates thought. Students who utilize the result of learning through oral and written presentations have truly integrated the knowledge base. Collaboration with other learners encourages effective communication and problem solving. Teachers and students expect to gain new insights and knowledge through the process of a class. Mentorship is a key component of my work as an educator. I believe that the availability of mentors early in the undergraduate process is essential as students begin to seek discourse and guidance. Collaborative work, shared experience and scholarship, open opportunity for informal discourse and opportunity to more fully understand each student’s learning style, gifts, and goals. It tends to promote mutual trust and respect between the student and teacher. Opportunity provided at Montclair State University for one-on-one mentorship through the design process is key to our student’s successful production designs. Student educational need must drive curriculum. The structure and sequence of coursework must be intentional rather than haphazard or for department convenience. I have regularly revised the curriculum in the Production and Design Program, in part to better align with student educational needs and expectations. Also, in my experience, effective recruitment of those students whose own statements of interest closely parallel the program mission, lead to a motivated student body and high rates of retention.
