... the exact incidence is unknown. However, it is a common problem in those who have had surgery for congenital heart disease (CHD), especially in patients with Mustard, Senning, and Fontan procedures (Fishberger 2001). Approximately 2/3 of all immediate posttransplant patients have SND (Jacquet et al. ...

Diagnosis of Heart Failure in Adults

... Systolic dysfunction is caused by impaired myocardial contractility and low ejection fraction. It is associated most often with coronary artery disease (especially myocardial infarction), idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy, hypertension, and valvular disease. The five types of heart failure resulting ...

Electrocardiography in horses – part 2

... Atrial premature contractions (APCs) or atrial premature beats occur earlier than expected in the normal basic rhythm (Hilwig, 1977). In athletic horses, APCs occur occasionally, but the performance is affected only when they cause an excessive heart rate during exercise or predispose to paroxysmal ...

We found significant differences in the onset and duration of AF in relation to the location of MI but Mohanad AL-Jashami17 demonstrated that there was no relation of AF to the site of infarction. Cardiac Perforation Associated with a Pacemaker or ICD Lead

... Cardiac perforation after pacemaker or implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implantation is an infrequent complication. The reported rates of perforation are 0.1-0.8% after pacemaker implantation and 0.6-5.2% after ICD implantation (Khan et al., 2005; Mahapatra et al., 2005). From 1994 to 20 ...

Jatene procedure

The Jatene procedure, or arterial switch, is an open heart surgical procedure used to correct dextro-transposition of the great arteries (d-TGA); its development was pioneered by Canadian cardiac surgeon William Mustard and it was named for Brazilian cardiac surgeon Adib Jatene, who was the first to use it successfully. It was the first method of d-TGA repair to be attempted, but the last to be put into regular use because of technological limitations at the time of its conception. Use of the arterial switch is historically preceded by two atrial switch methods: the Senning and Mustard procedures. This surgery may be used in combination with other procedures for treatment of certain cases of double outlet right ventricle (DORV) in which the great arteries are dextro-transposed.
