Magnetism - Deakin University Blogs

... Magnets exert a force on other magnets—and some metals—that can be described as a ‘push’ or a ‘pull’. As these forces act over a distance (for example, a magnet can attract a paperclip even over a distance of some centimetres), scientists describe the magnet as exerting a magnetic field. The magneti ...

... • We are interested, of course, in maintaining the original voltage ratio of 120 V to 24 V. This is readily achieved by rewinding the transformer. Thus, the number of turns on the primary will be reduced from 600 to 600 t  (120 V/1600 V) = 45 turns, while the secondary will have only 9 turns. • Thi ...

... making sure the motor turns with a specific angle and/or speed. This book discusses two types of motors intended for motion control: stepper motors and servomotors. I’ll refer to them as steppers and servos, respectively, and this chapter focuses on steppers. A stepper’s purpose is to rotate through ...

Electric machine

The academic study of electric machines is the universal study of electric motors and electric generators. By the classic definition, electric machine is synonymous with electric motor or electric generator, all of which are electromechanical energy converters: converting electricity to mechanical power (i.e., electric motor) or mechanical power to electricity (i.e., electric generator). The movement involved in the mechanical power can be rotating or linear.Although transformers do not contain any moving parts they are also included in the family of electric machines because they utilise electromagnetic phenomena.Electric machines (i.e., electric motors) consume approximately 60% of all electricity produced. Electric machines (i.e., electric generators) produce virtually all electricity consumed. Electric machines have become so ubiquitous that they are virtually overlooked as an integral component of the entire electricity infrastructure. Developing ever more efficient electric machine technology and influencing their use are crucial to any global conservation, green energy, or alternative energy strategy.
