Point Mutation
Point Mutation

... Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome The disease is caused by a small point mutation on a single gene known as LMNA. Almost all cases are caused by the substitution of only one base pair out of the approximate 25 000 DNA base pairs that compose the LMNA gene. This gene codes for the protein lamin A ...

... a. One species of ground finch (flightless bird) thrived on Island Alpha for thousands of years. It had small beaks and ate the soft, succulent seeds that were produced by the plants on the island. One day there was a huge volcanic eruption which killed many, but not all of the birds on the island. ...

It is easy to get lost in the details of linkage mapping to identify human disease genes and to forget that the (relatively) simple ideas here only apply to situations where disease is determined principally by mutation of a single gene. ... Some substitution mutations have no effect on the protein coded for There are at least four reasons for this: 1. Because of the redundancy of the genetic code Substitutions are often referred to as misense mutations 2. A change in an amino acid may have no effect on a protein’s function. There are r ...

Epistasis

Epistasis is a phenomenon that consists of the effect of one gene being dependent on the presence of one or more 'modifier genes' (genetic background). Similarly, epistatic mutations have different effects in combination than individually. It was originally a concept from genetics but is now used in biochemistry, population genetics, computational biology and evolutionary biology. It arises due to interactions, either between genes, or within them leading to non-additive effects. Epistasis has a large influence on the shape of evolutionary landscapes which leads to profound consequences for evolution and evolvability of traits.
