Compound heterozygosity of novel missense

... Mutations associated with hereditary combined VKD coagulation factor deficiency are rare. The carboxylase is encoded by a single gene,29 and only 3 naturally occurring missense mutations have previously been identified: Leu394Arg,10 which is impaired in both Glu binding and propeptide binding,30 Trp ...

The availability of an inducible promoter which functions well in mycobacteria including the important human pathogen Mycobacterium tuberculosis would be extremely useful. The acetamidase system ha ...

Acriflavine -resistant Mutants of Aspergillus nidulans

... Various mutant types have been used in genetic investigations with Aspergillus nidulans. Such types include those differing from wild type in conidial colour, colony morphology, nutritional requirements and ability to secrete certain enzymes (Pontecorvo, 1953). The present paper reports the extensio ...

Alleles or allele combinations, and the traits they produce, determine fitness of an individual: # of offspring that survive to reproduce - if you live forever but produce no offspring, your fitness = 0 Allele combinations resulting in higher fitness are passed to more offspring, and thus those alle ...

A genetic screen in zebrafish identifies the mutants

... The hepatomegaly screen Our laboratory has used viral insertional mutagenesis to generate a collection of over 400 zebrafish lines that are mutated in 315 recessive embryonic lethal genes. Epistasis

Epistasis is a phenomenon that consists of the effect of one gene being dependent on the presence of one or more 'modifier genes' (genetic background). Similarly, epistatic mutations have different effects in combination than individually. It was originally a concept from genetics but is now used in biochemistry, population genetics, computational biology and evolutionary biology. It arises due to interactions, either between genes, or within them leading to non-additive effects. Epistasis has a large influence on the shape of evolutionary landscapes which leads to profound consequences for evolution and evolvability of traits.
