For example, Figure 1c shows the entire range of the species being polymorphic for two alleles, B and b, at a second locus that, in this case, is not under disruptive selection. However, the situation i ...

These insert locations are not entirely random, but TEs can, in principle, be inserted into almost any region of the genome. TEs can therefore insert into genes, disrupting its function a ...

Problems of Kinship

... Why should an individual warn others when doing so makes it MORE vulnerable to predation? The behavior does not increase the fitness of the actor. How could it be maintained in the population? ... Pax-6 contains a paired domain, and a paired-like homeodomain, but lacks the octapeptide (Ton et al. 1991). The role of Pax-6 appears to be evolutionarily conserved during eye development in both mammals and flies. An important function for Pax-6 in mammalian eye development was deduced from the dis ...

Nutriepigenomics

Nutriepigenomics is the study of food nutrients and their effects on human health through epigenetic modifications. There is now considerable evidence that nutritional imbalances during gestation and lactation are linked to non-communicable diseases, such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, and cancer. If metabolic disturbances occur during critical time windows of development, the resulting epigenetic alterations can lead to permanent changes in tissue and organ structure or function and predispose individuals to disease.
