... Potential V is potential energy per unit charge and is a scalar field defined at all points in space. The potential difference between two points equals the amount of work that would be required to move a unit positive test charge (i.e. a charge of 1 C) between those points. The potential due to a q ...

Theoretical investigation of magnetic-field

... We report theoretical results for magnetic-field-induced 2p5 3s 3P0,2 − 2p 6 1S0 E1 transitions in Ne-like ions with zero nuclear spin (I = 0) between Mg III and Zn XXI as well as in Ne I. We demonstrate that it is important to include both “perturber” states 2p 5 3s 1P1 and 2p 5 3s 3P1 in order to ...

In Maxwell’s Treatise, electric charge [1, Art. 31], which he also calls “electrification,” or “free electricity,” or just “electricity” is a fluid substance, that is, a continuum [1, Art. 36], and electric conduction current is the “transference of electrification” [1, Art. 231]. Maxwell explains that ...

Magnetic monopole

A magnetic monopole is a hypothetical elementary particle in particle physics that is an isolated magnet with only one magnetic pole (a north pole without a south pole or vice versa). In more technical terms, a magnetic monopole would have a net ""magnetic charge"". Modern interest in the concept stems from particle theories, notably the grand unified and superstring theories, which predict their existence.Magnetism in bar magnets and electromagnets does not arise from magnetic monopoles. There is no conclusive experimental evidence that magnetic monopoles exist at all in our universe. Some condensed matter systems contain effective (non-isolated) magnetic monopole quasi-particles, or contain phenomena that are mathematically analogous to magnetic monopoles.
