... noble metal that becomes dispersive dielectric at optical frequencies. The dispersion behavior of silver follows the classical Drude model at optical frequencies, ε = ε∞ + {ωp2 /(ω 2 − iωγ)}, where ε∞ is the permittivity at infinite frequency, ωp is the plasma frequency and γ is the collision freque ...

... Most systems will require a fiber optic cable that can be connected and possibly disconnected, making bare cleaved fibers impractical. The traditional method of polishing the fiber ferrule is to use mechanical methods with finer grits on each polishing step. Following cleaving of the excess fiber ou ...

Measurement of the dispersion of air and of refractive index
Measurement of the dispersion of air and of refractive index

... Precise knowledge of the dispersion of light in air is crucial for accurate length interferometry [1,2], geodetic surveying [3] and ground-based astronomical observations [4], and it can be useful to measure pollution or humidity levels [5,6]. Phenomenological formulae allowing the calculation of th ...

The comb is started from chaotic oscillations, but when the laser frequency moves to to the position where regular solutions are allowed, the oscillation pattern changes. The modification of the oscillation regime is accompanied by intricate comb dynamics. This is not t ...

... 1, each lens produces a magnified image in the image plane behind the lens, which is further magnified by the next lens and finally imaged onto the MCP plane. In order to achieve a sharp image, the focal length of each lens is matched to the position of the image plane of the previous lens. The posi ...

Optical tweezers

Optical tweezers (originally called ""single-beam gradient force trap"") are scientific instruments that use a highly focused laser beam to provide an attractive or repulsive force (typically on the order of piconewtons), depending on the refractive index mismatch to physically hold and move microscopic dielectric objects similar to tweezers. Optical tweezers have been particularly successful in studying a variety of biological systems in recent years.
