Circumstellar Material in Young Stellar Objects
Circumstellar Material in Young Stellar Objects

... One of the basic tasks of science is to understand how we and the world around us have come into existence. The thesis presented here deals with a small part of that question: how do stars form? In the eighteenth century the French astronomer Laplace asked himself the same question, and came up with ...

... occurs is the blaze wavelength. Holographic gratings are generally less efficient than ruled gratings because they cannot be blazed in the classical sense. There are also special cases (e.g. when the spacing to wavelength ratio is near one) where a sinusoidal grating has virtually the same efficienc ...

Principles of Fiber Optic Communication
Principles of Fiber Optic Communication

... Communication implies transfer of information from one point to another. When it is necessary to transmit information, such as speech, images, or data, over a distance, one generally uses the concept of carrier wave communication. In such a system, the information to be sent modulates an electromagn ...
Ab initio Calculations of Optical Rotation
Ab initio Calculations of Optical Rotation

... Coupled cluster (CC) and density functional theory (DFT) are highly regarded as robust quantum chemical methods for accurately predicting a wide variety of properties, such as molecular structures, thermochemical data, vibrational spectra, etc., but there has been little focus on the theoretical pre ...

The model is based on a set of five rate equations: one for the ground state (GS) photons, another one treating the phase difference between the slave and the master lasers while three rate equations are used to describe the carriers in WL, ES and GS, respectively. The modulation transfer fu ...

Thus a grating with any groove shape, such as sinusoidal, binary, trapezoidal, or blazed, is classified as a TIR grating provided that expression (1) is satisfied. In addition they are excellent test-beds to study accretion physics and outflows. The X-ray behaviour of these systems determines the class of system (c ...

Light Scattering by Fractal Aggregates: A Review

... cluster aggregates (DLCA) with fractal dimensions of D ’ 1:75, which occur frequently in aerosols and colloids, but other types of aggregates are discussed as well. The results of the review are quite general. A scaling description of the scattering of waves forms the basis of our understanding. Thi ...

Magnetic circular dichroism

Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) is the differential absorption of left and right circularly polarized (LCP and RCP) light, induced in a sample by a strong magnetic field oriented parallel to the direction of light propagation. MCD measurements can detect transitions which are too weak to be seen in conventional optical absorption spectra; they can also probe paramagnetic properties and the symmetry of the electronic levels of the studied systems, such as metal ion sites.
