... frequency analysis of images, and for the construction of real time correlators. One property that makes optics an exciting tool for frequency analysis is that, in free-space propogation of light, one can see the effects of lenses and filters on a light beam as the beam propogates through the system ...

... Recently high frequency miniaturized phased array transmitters and receivers have been subject of interest for ranging, imaging, and directional communication at microwave, mm-wave, and THz frequencies [2-4]. Optical phased arrays (OPA) based on the same principle at much smaller wavelength have pro ...

For this reason, standing-wave diffraction is not an efficient technique for producing a coherent splitting into high-transverse-momentum states. In the case of single-photon excitation or stimul ...

No one has ever been able to define the difference between interference and diffraction satisfactorily … there is no specific, important physical difference between them … roughly speaking … when there are only a few sources, say two, interfering, then the result is usually called interference, but ...

FOCUSING OF NEUTRONS USING NANOTUBES WITH SURFACE

... Neutron polycapillary optics was first suggested by M.A. Kumakhov about 25 years ago. Polycapillary technologies enable creation of neutron diffractometers, spectrometers, reflectometers, microscopes—all with a micron-size focal spot [1,2]. New instruments of neutron optics are portable and highly e ...

Harold Hopkins (physicist)

Harold Horace Hopkins FRS (1918–1994) was a renowned British physicist. His Wave Theory of Aberrations, (published by Oxford University Press 1950), is central to all modern optical design and provides the mathematical analysis which enables the use of computers to create the wealth of high quality lenses available today. In addition to his theoretical work, his many inventions are in daily use throughout the world. These include zoom lenses, coherent fibre-optics and more recently the rod-lens endoscopes which 'opened the door' to modern key-hole surgery. He was the recipient of many of the world's most prestigious awards and was twice nominated for a Nobel Prize. His citation on receiving the Rumford Medal from the Royal Society in 1984 stated: ""In recognition of his many contributions to the theory and design of optical instruments, especially of a wide variety of important new medical instruments which have made a major contribution to clinical diagnosis and surgery.""
